Of all things except Cuba turning from its Communist ways, oil would be the thing to end it.

If the embargo was lifted all of our cigars would be gone. Like Cliff said, oil is a fantastic motivator for lifting the embargo.

I was in Cuba last month and met a bunch of guys working on the oil rigs. Apparently, what they're bring up is not light sweet crude. The quality is very poor and is only used for power plants. I don't see the US lifting the embargo so they can get there hands on low grade.

In July 2004, however, the Spanish oil company Repsol-YPF, in partnership with Cuba's state oil company, CUPET, identified five fields it classified as "high-quality" in the deep water of the Florida Straits, 20 miles northeast of Havana."

I don't think that you'll see the embargo lifted, though...you'll only see big oil be exempted. That way the administration can placate both the big oil interests that they are so cozy with, as well as the Cuban-American voting bloc in south Florida.

Any hope of travel bans or Cuban product bans being lifted is merely wishful thinking in my opion. Also, who's to say that Castro would even welcome American oil investment? With the number of countries lining up ahead of us, and with Venuzuela's Hugo Chavez whispering in Fidel's ear, we might just be given the finger and squeezed out of the equation.

I used to think that I would see the embargo lifted in my lifetime, but I am really not so sure anymore.
