Hey guys,

This is the first year that my wife is a "mother". What are some suggestions for a good gift? I think that my previous ideas of a box of EL's or perhaps some fine power tools may not be the best decision.

Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards possibly an appliance that may make her life easier or something that she would appreciate but we'd never buy on a normal trip to the stores.

Last year was my wife's first. I took our daughter and bought one of those kits to press her hands and feet into. Then took a pic we had of her to Walgreens, put it in Black and White and framed them all together. All in all I think I spent around 50 bucks but my wife was ecstatic. Now that you have kids it's all about making it with them involved. Those are the ones that mean the most.

Oh and don't forget a card and let the little on scrawl on it. That goes over well too.

Get a relative or friend to watch your child for the evening ... then take her out on a surprise date ( nice dinner + a movie, niteclub or dancing ). This will score way more points for you vs. any "present" you would buy. Probably enough so she will gladly smile when you do purchase those power tools and ELs for yourself.

When our first was born and mothers day rolled around, I bought her a charm braclet with one charm with our son's name on it. That braclet has grown with each step and and our daughter took. Places we went togather, graduations, awards etc. We just added the granddaughter last year. Its one of her most cherished items.

I've never understood why women demand MOTHERS Day presents from their HUSBANDS. I mean, I understand that with small children, the gift is usually guided and purchased by the father, that's just the way it is. But why in fuck do women with grown children, or no children expect a Mothers Day present from their husbands? I've had this argument with many a woman, the wife included, luckily, she agrees (well, she says she does anyways...). I mean, I by my mother a present, she buys hers one, I take the kid out to get her something, her older son buys her something. That's the way it works in my opinion. I mean, how many women buy their husbands Fathers Day presents? I don't know of many..Maybe I should make a poll....Do you give your wifes mothers day presents? Does she give you a fathers day present?

I have a two year old so yes we do. But ostensibly it's from the kid. Before we had kids we did not do this. I imagine once our children are grown we won't then either. Not unless she makes me anyway.

For a response to Texas Cop:

Mother's Day is a day to show appreciation to Mother's for the work they do. I'm not a big fan or beleiver in buying huge gifts for people just because it is a holiday. I don't really even do much for V-day for my wife, nor do it spend a lot of money on Mother's Day. I tend to get flower and write something to show my appreciation.

As whether or not to buy a wife a Mother's Day gift, I would say yes. Though I don't even have kids, I purchase my wife flowers on this Holiday (from the dog, since he is our kid at the moment), but I do this to tell her I appreciate her. And yes she does similar things for me on Father's day. In fact on V-day she bought me a Xikar cutter (pretty cool if you ask me). I think it sure a hell beat the flowers and dinner I gave her.

I follow Ted's plan but I sometimes get her a gift certificate at her nail salon for a manicure and pedcure, or a massage. She has always loved that. And I don't smoke cigars that day for good measure.

Excellent, Tedski. You can always tell the experienced married guys; no rookie mistakes here. . .:rolling:

Well, I think that I have it figured out.

1) I bought her a few books on a few topics she's been pretty passionate about. This will show I am supporting her interests and let's face it she has lot's of time to read these days so it will be usefull as well.
2) Going to get some supplies so I can make prints of the boys hands, our hands and frame it all. Since she is crafty I will only make the prints of the boy and frame it with a nice card. This way she can finish it off with a bit of the things that she wants to. She already has some stuff together ie hospital bands, etc. I don't step on her toes but It's the first Mother's day and will be a good memento for years to come to look back on.
3) Go on a picnic together so the boy can come and it will be nice and personal. Lennon is only 7 weeks old (8 on sunday) so he's not really pass off material yet. Not sure who would worry more, him or her. It's early spring up here so not a lot of bugs are out yet. It's supposed to be beautiful on Sunday so let's hope it holds. Can probably even find time if the weather is nice to enjoy a Cohiba while we talk in the fresh air.
4) Go practice for sister for Lennon:crackwhip
