I'm going to send this to the appropriate channels as well as here.
I opened the My Father Limited 2010 box last night because of certain rumors that the varnish had retained it scent on the inside of the box and coffins as well. Well after opening up my box I smelled the inside and indeed it had a unmistakable vanish smell to it. (I believe it's due to both the inside lid and coffins all being varnished.)
I then proceeded to open all coffins(no seals) and smell the inside of each coffin. Every coffin as well had the lacquer/varnish smell although lighter in scent. I now have all the cigars out of there coffins and resting in one of my Vinos. I also have all the coffins resting out of the box and all lids half open. The cigars and cello however do not smell. I'm going to let them sit a few weeks to a month and see if I can get rid of the smell. Hopefully I can because it would suck to not be able to age them in there rightfull place.
Just a FYI guys. And to those that purchased these I would suggest the same thing right now.
Justin

Thanks for the heads up J. I did not notice a smell when I opened my box the first time, nor when I smoked one of them. But I checked again, and did notice a very light smell of varnish in each coffin. But did not notice that smell on the cigars at all.

Thanks for the "headsup" Justin, but I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I bought my box home last week and tucked it away in the bottom of my cabinet. I only took the cello off the box. After reading your post I worried all day today at work. I cut the seal and I opened my box 5 minutes ago and got nothing but the smell of cedar.

Good to know Larry but I would open a coffin and give a snif as well.

Yes, if they smell, DON'T put them in your humidor/tupperdor! The smell will premeate things.

I had this same thing happen with a box of Camacho Liberty--box, lid, and coffins all smelled sharply. After letting the box set for a while, it seems to smell of nothing but lovely cedar now :)

Justin good catch. I too must have been lucky. After reading your post and my heart rate excellerated the wife said she hasn't seen me move that fast in years when I flew down to the basement to check the cigars.

When I checked my box (inside outside) each coffin (inside outside) and cigars, all I got was a cedar smell.

Left the wife and mother-in-law check and they both only smelled cedar.

Sorry to hear about yours and a couple others and hope that all turns out well for you.

Mine had the smell too. I took them out of the coffins. I sold them to a buddy of mine b/c I didn't like the cigar enough to justify the price.

Thanks for the warning! I checked over the weekend and mine also have a smell. They're currently being "aired out." I have box #613.

Can you elaborate on what you thought about the cigar?

~brooks
The flavors were very muted and one-dimensional. I thought that it should have some more strength or change up the flavor because of how big the darn thing is. Also, $18 is a bit pricey. Of course, there were stems in them. I have noticed that a lot lately with Tatuaje and DPG cigars.

If you want, let me know and I will post the pic of the Tatuaje HCS that had 3 huge stems in it. I have been told that the stems are normal, but these were huge.
