Being in Afghanistan, I was hesitant to order cigars online. But since I got my Humidistats, Hygrometer, and Cuban Crafters Perfect Cutter just 9 days after I ordered, I decided to give it a go. I'm 2 smokes away from having tried everything available at the Shoppette, and I want to broaden my experience.

I was going to order a custom 5 cigar sampler from Famous Smoke, but since they require the first order to ship to the billing address, "NO EXCEPTIONS", I went with Cigars International. I was initially looking at the Victor Sinclair Baker's Dozen, but after reading around on here that many people think they taste like burnt grass, and a couple CigarObsession reviews that seemed to boil down to "meh", I went with the CAO Dream Team sampler based off the more enthusiastic reviews.

I also went with this one because I wanted to try some Maduros. From some descriptions I've heard, it sounds like something I may like. Once I smoke an MX2, I should definitely know.

I originally wanted to get a 5 cigar custom sampler from Famous Smoke consisting of an A. Fuente Chateau Fuente Natural and Maduro, a Royal Salute Natural and Maduro, and a Hemmingway classic. Hopefully those will still be available once I get home. I figure a natural and a maduro in the same line and shape would be the best way to compare.

So, here's my question. How long after I receive these should I wait? It didn't take long for the two humidistats I ordered to get my cigar box humidor to a solid 70%, at 70F. I don't even have to keep it in a plastic bag! So with that humidity, how long should I let them set? I'm assuming the cigars may be a little dry (hopefully not a lot dry) by the time I get them, since they will take 9 days to get here... in the heat of May/June. Anybody have experience with CigarsInternational shipments? Do they throw humidity packs in with their shipmets (or at least seal them in a ziploc bag)?

It may be a long wait if I have to recondition them over the course of a month... :crying:

If they seem like theyre holding humidity, why wait. If they feel dry wait as long as you have to.

Yeah good job staying away from Victor Sinclair. The CAO's are much better. CAO VR is one of my favorite cigars. Love em. Brazilia, Italia and Black are also great cigars.

Enjoy them!

Ok, I'll hope for the best when they arrive! I'm going to try not to smoke my Brickhouse until they get here. That way I can directly compare the feel for a stick I know should be at a good level, and the CAOs. I should probably wait at least a week, I'd imagine, but I'll see what condition they are in when they arrive. As long as they are in a sealed bag, I wouldn't think they would dry out. But if the seal is broken...

I guess I'll find out around the 5th of June...

I got my sampler in today! Only took 6 days to get to where I am in Afghanistan, which is a new record!

I haven't smoked any yet, I've just unwrapped them and put them in my humidor. It was previously 69% when I first opened it after getting the cigars. After leaving them in there about 2 hours, the humidity only got to 64%, so I'm assuming that means they are a bit on the dry side. So I figure I'll let them rest for a couple weeks.

My first impression of the aroma is one of interest. These definitely have a markedly different aroma from the Cuesta Reys I have had. All of them have a sharp aroma which I would describe as having bite. Here is what I got from each one:

Mx2: Very dark chocolate, woody, and earthy.
Italia: Dark, woody with manure
Brazilia: Very dark, licoriche
Black: Sharp manure
VR Moby: Cedar, woody

One thing of note is I also have a Cuesta Rey Centenario Riviera in the humidor which I remember having a nice sweet aroma to it. It now has adopted the general CAO aroma.

So, a few questions: is what I am smelling typical of maduro wrappers? Will having maduros in with non-maduros affect the flavors of a non-maduro?

Also, one of the Black Bengals seems rock hard. Most of them seem a little on the hard side from what I've had with other cigars, but the one is especially hard. Does this indicate that they are just a bit dry, or is this standard for CAOs?

Thanks!

Will put some reviews up once I smoke em in a few weeks.
