Anticipating what Mr. O said last week about reinstating the assault rifle ban that ended in 2004 under the watch of GW, I took the first step.

Unlike cigars, and I have my fingers crossed on this one, I will be limiting my collection to 3 firearms:

(1.) And my first is... An M4 - DPMS lower and milli-spec Saber Arms upper. (Being custom built over the next week or two)
(2.) More later... will update as I go.
(3.) Ditto on #2

I'm pretty excited, so if there are any AR/M4 guys out there any info on cool accessories for the quad-rail or respectably priced scopes... I'm all for that.

Also, any bargain .223 suppliers wouldn't hurt either (I know that one is a little bit of a pipe dream).

I said my piece... pictures later.

Go to AR15.com and lurk for awhile. You will learn much and see many vendors that are reliable and offer high quality goods. Note the vendor links on the opening page. If you join, you will have access to the equipment exchange.

Based on info coming up after Pres. O's statement, it's still a decently far stretch that said ban will come back into existance, but still something to worry about. Have fun with the '15, they are great rifles.

Oh, and pictures once in hand are, of course, a must.

very nice, I have a DPMS AR-15, its a very nice piece of hardware. Nik (coppereagl) gave me a gangsta grip with pop out stand before he shipped out. very nice mod. increased 100 yard free standing accuracy a lot for me, combined with a laser dot site... you'll be happy with yours :riflefire

BTW 5.56 ammo is wicked expensive. but I predict that after we pull out it'll become very hoardable

the best place to get accesiores cheap is Gunbroker.com. magpul makes great grips. as for discount ammo it helps having friends in the military that are apart of an H&S company:stretchgr

Cyramm:

Sounds like you are having a nice riffle built. Sabre makes some nice uppers from what I've read. I just took the plunge and purchased an M4 AR from Auction Arms.

Auction arms is also a good site to check out. But as mentioned Gunbroker is the best, as it's the biggest.

Also check in your area if there is any Gun shows? I'll be attending one next week:stretchgr

As for accesories. You may want to check into getting a 2 stage trigger.

i just got a nice little education on optics yesterday while at a gun range. (shot my DPMS Panther Lite for the first time. Nice, tight groupings using iron sites at 25 meters.)

ANyhow, i was inquiring what the best optics option for having close range capabilities (100 yds and in) and being able to effortlessly range out to 300 yds or so. The answer was disappointing. the only thing for those 2 options in one are a Trijicon system. What's dissappointing is that an Trijicon system will cost mroe than the gun. $1059. The plus side to that is it does everything i want plus it has built in back up iron sites; in case the main sstem fails for some reason. OH, and it also has built in cross hair range finder and drop compensator out to 700 yards. That's effin sweet!!!

No matter what optic system you go with, you'll want to have back up iron site (BUIS) in case the optics fail.

OUCH!!!!

Eotech makes highly respectable red dot sites. ($450-$569) Those are generally used for tactical use; i.e. close range shooting. You can get a magnifier to go with the red dot, but when your looking through at 250 yds, the red dot will obscure your target and you'l have know way of knwing if your actually aiming at it.

I did look at a scope that went from 1.5 to 4 power. at 1.5 it was virtually like looking through extremely clear glass. with the twist of a hand you can increase the range to easily go out to 300 yds. Total system to include mounts and rings would be about $450. My only problem with it is that it's gonna look kinda clunky...a big ol traditional looking rifle scope on a sweet looking ar-15.

In general though, the best line i've heard about ar-15 in my short career with them is this...

"They are the Mr. Potato Head of guns"

YO ucan trick out every single thing on them. You can accessorize to your hearts content.

As for me, I'm gonna go witht he Trijicon (when i can afford it), a quad rail for a light, a bipod and a 3 point sling.

The Trijicon will be several months away, in the meantime, i'm going to learn to shoot with the iron sites.

As for ammo...go to a gun show. You can get good prices. I picked up some dirty ol Wolf Ammo for practice shooting. 250 rds FMJ and 250 HP for $165. Wolf ammo has steel casings and steel ballistics/bullets/whatever you call it. (the thing that actually does the flying through the air part) It's steel too.

Goin to another gun show at the end of the month to pick up some good brass ammo.

They guys i tlaked to yesterday said there's a real chance of putting tracking info on each box of bullets or even each shell. That way the gov't can see who's got what. They even talked about expiration dates on them and having to turn in the ammo if expired. WTF?!?!

That sounds far fetched to me, but the scary thing is that it's the 3rd time i've heard this from 3 different sources that are very will in the know. 2 gun dealers and an expert in the industry. all people who are connected to the legislature and the industry.

Think of how we here on BOTL know about cigars months before they are released or even made public. well, these guys are in tune with the gun industry just the same as we are witht he cigar industry.

It certainly gives reason to consider it as a potential.

To that i say, buy everything you can afford to now before it's too late.

OK, i'm done with my gun rant.

Nice work matt.

what are the other 2 guns your'e gonna buy?

You'll like the fit and finish of your Saber Defense upper. I have one of their M4 flat tops and it's a fine rifle.

Finding .223 for plinking or 5.56 for hairier times can be quite the scavenger hunt these days, depending on where you live. Lots of folks buying up everything they see when a shipment does arrive in a store.

i have to go to gun shows to get ANY ammo. .40 cal is pretty well non-existent except at a bona fide gun store up in the big city.

.223 is available most places, but way expensive. I get 200 rds of prvi M855 at gun shows for $100 at the shows.

500 rds of Wolf plinking ammo for $150. steel casings, steel ballistics
