I was promoted about a week and a half ago to manager @ reebok. The crew I was given is very loose...loose to the point of barely calling what they do as work.

Last night I had to write a guy up for sleeping at my desk. He decided to take a nap while I was at lunch, but I guess he didn't count on me coming back 10 minutes early.

Being a cool guy, I wanted to cut him some slack. If he went back to work, I would throw out the write up. I gave him almost three hours to prove something. Here's what he did in almost three hours time.

Went to cafeteria for 1 1/2 hours.
Went to a different department to "holler at the honeys" for 1/2 hour.
Took an extended 15 minute break ( I clocked his break at 40 mins.)
Came back from break and used a cart as a chaise lounge for 15 mins.
Spent 15 minutes explaining that he couldn't take the hit for sleeping and for me to give him a chance to make it up.

So this guy gets really pissed of at me that I went ahead and wrote him up for sleeping and calls me all sorts of shit including "Cracker".:bouncetau

So can I turn this in to Readers Digest's column "All in a Day's Work"?

sounds like a real winner you have working for you there. Sorry about that, I understand how you feel when it comes to you busting you butt while others rid your coattails.

Sometimes you've just gotta holla at the honeys, ya know?

Okay, maybe not at work. Sounds like you've got a pretty big challenge ahead of you.

I wish i had honeys at work to holla at
I don't blame them sometimes, but it looks bad on me if I don't get them to stop it.

I'll set the scene:

3 guys sitting on 5gal. buckets in front of thier dbl. doors hollerin' and the girls when they walk by.

I've told them to be a little more discrete, but that's not working.

I've been stuck with the bad news bears.:crytears:

The guy is right Rob, you are a "cracker". :headroll:

As you are the new guy in charge, I suggest you bring your posse for a sit down and lay the law down; spain whut yous wantin dems 2 do and knot 2 do. Seriously, if your wanting change, you best to take the time and express that from day one otherwise change will be harder to do.

Best of luck to you cracker.

Rob, on the serious side, I have been down this road a few times. To protect yourself from HR and litigation you need to start documenting infractions, faithfully and regularly. My hunch is that you will need to clean out the "dead wood", so to speak and the first thing the lawyers want to see when you recommend your first termination is all of your documentation - IN AN HR file! It is ugly a times, but also why they chose you to sit in the big chair. . .:glassesgr

Very good advice. In this world of litigation, the file is your friend. The honey calls are equally scary today with the number of cases being won on sexual harassment. I dont envy you my friend.

Absolutely the way to go.

"Cracker"? Make sure that's in there. I'm pretty sure a company like Reebok has a policy on racist/derogatory comments.
Document. Document. Document.

This is correct....been there...done that. Make sure you evaluate their job performance (or none there of) and not their ability to take breaks. As far as the "girly" comments.....better deal with head on and early...Keep a daily calendar of "things' you do during the day.....Kinda like tying a string around your finger....Just enough to refresh your memory..........That is about THE worst part of your new job.

As an advocate for a labor union, I can tell you that this is sound advice. (even if it is for manglement) In just about any disciplinary case that I see, I simply attacked the process, thereby never having to defend the actions. People are always going to do stupid shit while at work. But if their bosses follow the correct procedures for disciplining someone, then it will be corrective in nature and solve the conduct at the lowest possible level. If you condone the conduct and then one day decide you've had enough. Then you will be processing their first offense. Since you've been complacent about the conduct and IF they have some excellent representation (such as myself) you won't even be able to get the first offense to stick.
I sum it up with Yogi Bear philosophy of life, which is "You put on the tie, you assume the responsibility". See if Yogi had never put on the tie, then Ranger Tom would have never complained about him getting in the picnic baskets, cause he would have just been an average bear.

Good luck,
Dub
