Habanos S.A., the worldwide distributor of Cuban cigars, will debut several new cigars this year. The releases include new sizes in existing brands, along with new Edición Limitadas, special collector’s humidors and regional-edition cigars.

The annual Habanos Festival in Havana, which starts on February 25, often serves as a sneak preview of the year’s Cuban offerings; Habanos tends to release cigars into the market gradually throughout the year, with some releases coming as late as November. According to Simon Chase, marketing director for Hunters & Frankau, the British importer of Cuban cigars, two new sizes will be introduced at the festival that are slated to go on sale in the late spring or early summer. One is the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial, a robusto measuring 5 1/2 inches long by 50 ring that was first released as an Edición Limitada in 2004. The other new size is the 6 1/2 by 50 H. Upmann Magnum 50, another former Edición Limitada (first seen in 2005). Both cigars will be added to the regular Habanos production portfolio and will be off e red in boxes of 10, 25 and 50. A Partagas Salamones package containing five cigars measuring 7 1/4 by 57 will come as a Casa del Habano shop exclusive.

Habanos will also be releasing its requisite three sizes for the 2008 lineup of Edición Limitadas: the Montecristo Sublimes, measuring a thick 6 1/2 inches by 54 ring; the Cuaba Piramide, 6 1/8 by 52; and the Partagas Serie D No. 5, a short, squat cigar measuring 4 1/3 by 50, according to
Chase. The Montecristo and the Cuaba will come in boxes of 10 while the Partagas will be available in boxes of 25.

“There will be a raft of new tubes introduced by the end of the year, mostly in the last quarter,” said Chase. “All existing tube lines are having the designs changed and some sizes which have never been tubed before will be.”Chase added that the Bolivar Royal Corona (Cigar Aficionado’s 2006 Cigar of the Year) is scheduled to be tubed this year. Tubed versions of the H. Upmann Magnum 46 and the Partagas Serie P No. 2, which were supposed to hit the market last year, are expected to reach international retail shops sometime in 2008.

Collectors of Cuba’s limited-edition humidors will have two offerings to look forw a rd to this year. The 2008 Colección Habanos book humidor will hold 20 Cohiba Sublimes Extra, each measuring 7 1/4 by 54 (slightly larger than the 6 1/2 by 54 Cohiba Sublimes 2004 Edición Limitadas). Only 700 humidors will be made. The ’08 Antique Humidor will feature Romeo y Julieta Romeos, which measure 6 1/2 inches by 52 ring. Only 250 units will be produced.

Although some of the 2007 regional-edition Cubans have only recently arrived in their respective countries, the 2008 program has already been determined for the United Kingdom, which will be receiving La Gloria Cubana Gloriosos, 6 1/8 by 50, and Punch Serie d’Oro No. 1s, 6 1/8 by 52 ring torpedos. As he did for last year’s regional-edition release, Chase did some research and
resurrected these vintage sizes from antiquity. “We are working once again with Vrijdag, the Dutch printer, to re-create not only an old La Gloria Cubana band, but also an original box label,” said Chase.

“On this one [Punch], I discovered in a 1930s price list that Punch used to make a series of figurado sizes called Serie d’Oro Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The No. 1 was a piramide, the No. 2 a Campana and the No. 3 a Petit Piramide. The box is post-revolution and has certain unusual characteristics which we will be trying to match, although it is too soon to know if we can do so.”
