Got a shipment in from A very reputable place in Belgium. Part of it was a box of 50 Hoyo double coronas from 1998.

I know I 'should' let them rest but was too excited to try one.

It was unsmokeable. Draw was absurdly tight with VERY little smoke production.

Thoughts? Try another one now to see if it was just a bad stick? Let them sit for 2 weeks?

I've contacted the store I bought them from but Their main guy is in Argentina for a month I believe.

Wanted to see what the board has to say.

A shipment from the same vendor of Cohiba lanceros smoke perfectly right out of the box.

Thanks guys. I'm a Cuban noob.

Not the BOTL police, but we don't openly acknowledge places where habanos can be purchased from.

On to your experience, it may have been a dud, but habanos from the time of the onset of the boom have been known to have quality control issues. May need dry boxing, but there is no way of knowing without seeing them as you can't verify how they were stored over the past 17 years.

There are those who disagree and have done testing on this but in my experience (and I've kept track since they asked me to 8/53) ccs have more draw problems than ncs for me. Almost all have been in my humidor for a while.

Most cuban noobs don't start by buying cabs of 1998 dcs or Cohiba lances. :)

Seriously, what an animal. Sounds like some @ChefBoyRG54 shit...
Ok ok. Not a total noob. Been smoking Cubans for a couple years. Mostly Siglos and Behikes.

I meant in comparison to the brain trust that is BOTL, I'm a noob.

PS the gentleman I was referring to that was in Argentina apparently did have email access and said try another one immediately. Just a problem with the Cubans before they started doing draw tests.

Was he going to replace them if that one was a bad draw also?

A friend of mine had the same issue with these....and he kept his at 62% and rested after he ordered them for a year. He sent me one of them to try it out and yes....this sucker was plugged and tight but he knows I have a draw tool that will open up even the most stubborn plugged cigar. After cutting the head and taking a test draw this was like trying to suck a golf ball through a garden hose...wasn't going to happen. I used my tool to open it up and minutes later this cigar was smoking like Jessica Alba....nice and what a great cigar it turned out to be. I notified my friend and he wanted to buy my cigar draw tool ....no dice as I only have 2 of them and they must last me the rest of my unnatural life.

Second is just as bad as the first.

Awaiting word on what the seller wants to do.

Why would he do anything? It's the chance you take with cigars. I wish there was a "you don't like them you can return them" policy.

Maybe I'm just shitt out of luck. This is new territory for me. But it's not "like" these are truly unsmokeable. Some fellow local BOTL can verify at the HERF this weekend.

Been smoking for a couple of decades and have not heard of anyone refunding for bad draw. But I've never seen Africa either and I've been told it's there so my lack of experience doesn't mean much. (I have a box of Partagas from the same year that has 1/4 plugged)

Well as I suspected, this gentleman is being superb.

He has offered to credit me if the third is plugged. I'm going to let the most senior cigar smoker at my HERF this weekend make that determination on the third cigar.

Thanks for the advice, all!

Sounds like a good Vendor. I'd almost beg you to send me one of those so I can see for myself and see if it's plugged....then use my draw tool and then smoke it with a U Tube response. I'm betting that the cigars are still smokeable with some work ( reaming ) and bet they taste great as the last one I smoked.
