Finally! I found a cigar forum that works on my work computer!

My name is Richard, I'm 25 years old, and am a law enforcement officer for the local Sheriff's Department. I've been smoking cigars for a little over a year now but took a good 4 month break where I only smoked pipe tobacco. I live in Guyton, Ga which is about an hour outside of Savannah and we only have three local cigar shops. I'm beginning to look into buying from online vendors as I recently realized just how much the shops around here are jacking the prices up. In the year that I've been smoking I've only came up with a few favorites which include Rocky Patel Vintage 1990, Arturo Fuente Hemingway, Arturo Fuente Anejo, and various other Maduros. Though I've found a love for Maduros, I like flavored cigars such as Acid Blondies and Acid Kuba Kubas as well.

Now that I've introduced myself, can you guys give me suggestions of any cigars I may enjoy? Ring size and length aren't really a factor as I like anything from Petit Coronas to Torpedos to Churchhills and even some of the Nub brand cigars.

Welcome, homeskillet! It looks like you found the right place. I would suggest any size Undercrown or Opus X and maybe a few Drew Estate Naturals. Also I have been smoking some El Rey Del Mundos lately that are pretty good.

FYI- Listen to Javajunkie... He is a pretty swell dude. ;)

As far as suggestions, you're going to get everything but the kitchen sink - a wide array of personal preferences on this site (which is a good thing, IMO).

That being said, welcome and enjoy. Soak up the stogie knowledge that is BOTL.

Welcome from the Show-Me State :waving:. Hope you enjoy your stay. As for suggestions...there are a number of good Maduros out there, but a few favorites of mine would be the 601 Blue Label, Pinar del Rio 1878 Capa Madura, any of the Tat Reservas, anything Liga Privada or Undercrown.

I'm beginning to look into buying from online vendors as I recently realized just how much the shops around here are jacking the prices up.
There are a number of reasons why you're local B&M has higher prices (taxes & overhead to name a few). Doesn't necessarily mean they're jacking their prices up for profit.

Hey Richard, welcome!

Dan made a good point, that your local shops, depending on your state are under a whole other set of rules when it comes to taxes and such. You normally go into your local B&M to develop a relationship face to face and help your local store out. As far as petite corons, if I am at a store an they have the Tatuaje Petite Cazadore Reserva, I am picking that up. IMO, it is one of the best smokes out there that fits my flavor profile. As far as others (not in that vitola) I like are Liga Privada, most Padron (26,64), some Casa Magna, the EPC line, especially the New Wave. Also, for maduros I always like to have Pepin JJ maduro.

If you don't mind smaller cigars, you might want to check out the man o war Puro authentico madero coronas. They do actually give you quite a long burn for their size and are quite reasonable.

Welcome and enjoy the site.

The thing with the local shops is there is one named Ye Olde Tobacco that has two locations in Savannah, one on the Southside and one on River Street. The one on the Southside is reasonably priced, $2-$3 more than what you can get your sticks for online which isn't bad considering shipping. The one downtown, same store/company mind you, is $6 more on top of the already $2-$3, which I think is a bit ridiculous. I have to say though, the people who own and run the Southside store on a daily basis are AWESOME! They know you by name, remember what you purchased last and ask you how you liked the product, and offer really good suggestions once they get a grasp on your tastes. Also, their pipe tobacco blends are awesome. I guess I made it seem worse than it really is. We don't have a vast amount of cigar shops in our area but I do support them when I'm in town.

With all these great suggestions, do any of you use any online vendors or do you think I should just stick with Ye Olde? I am looking to buy a humidor and most of the online vendors have beginners kits. Are these worth the money or do you not really need much more than the humidor to get started?

online is good, if you know what you want or are willing to gamble. i like seeing and smelling first, but that is just me, the interwebz hook up MANY of us here.

and wait on a humi! go tupperdor for right now. until you lock in your smoking preferences. you ALWAYS outgrow your first (and usually second) storage solution. we call it the "slippery slope". o)

Hey Richard,

:welcome: from Minnesota!

Javajunkie is spot on...I started buying online and went from 2 cigars to 300 in about 6 months. Needless to say my first and second storage solutions got outgrown really quickly. Tupperdor is definitely the way to go in the beginning because it is inexpensive and also keeps your smokes in a consistant humidity.

For online buys I generally use Cigarbid.com and have gotten some really good deals. Be careful though because it is easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and pay too much for something and/or buy something that you really don't want because you thought it was a "good deal". My suggestion is to buy and try from your local B&M first if you can and then target stuff on the auction sites that you have already tried and liked. I also double check prices first on a couple of other websites like Famous Smoke and Cigars International first which helps me set my ceiling for what I am going to bid.

Welcome!

JavaJunkie provides some great suggestions. I will echo the maduro choices of Liga Privada Unico Serie and Tatuaje. If you're a fan of Arturo Fuente, try the Hemingway Maduro. Also, double the size (at least) of the hunidor your thinking of purchasing; you will run out of room quickly!
