Newbe Seeking Advice

Although I have been lurking for a while , I just now decided to register and start posting. I started in this hobby several years ago when I had my first CC (RyJ) in Beijing (yes it was real) . Since then I have tried numerous NC , but I am going on a trip to Germany and I will have an opportunity to visit a LCDH.

My questions regard the packaging and stability during transport. How long will the cigars last in a sealed 3 or 5 pack before they have to be put back in a humidor? Do they have any humidipak or similar to maintain the RH? Are the CC in the duty free (Germany) typically kept in a humidor?

Some of these questions are as a result of a recent trip to Japan -Narita where I saw some 3 paks of COHIBA basically kept in a end cap display so I am assuming that there must be something within the packaging to maintain them properly.

Not sure on how they're kept, but if you're concerned about traveling with them, bring along some of your own humi pillows or humipacks. They aren't expensive and you can just stick them in your carry on on the way there and a ziplock baggie with the sticks on the way back.

No advice on returning to the US (if you live there. I'm mobile and can't see locations) with them though as I've never done so, sorry.

I agree as far as the humi pillows are concerned, If you are using a travel case and are doing much driving I would caution against the temperature in the car if it is hot while traveling.
While doing a road trip back East last summer that was the worst enemy leaving them in the car in high temps can really hurt them fast.

If that is not the case and you are just plain hopping or the temp is more moderate no worries.

Bring your own humidipaks! All the stores I have been to in Germany don't carry them.

If you are talking less than a week travel time from purchase to home humidor, don't worry about anything special. When you get back toss in your humidor and let them "rest" for a bit. You'll be good to go.

High humidity has the most rapid effect on cigars. Low humidity takes a couple days to make a difference.

As far as cardboard packs vs boxes, no real difference as to how traveling cigars are effected.

I think we all get too worried about maintaining cigars short term. They are amazingly resilient products.

This time of the year bring a Humi Pak with you. A handful of cigar stores have them, as they are slowly catching on. But they are definately way more popular back in the states.

The duty free in Frankfurt am Main Airport is actually a walk-in humidor. The cigars are well cared for.

Many thanks to all that replied.

My guess is that I will buy a few to have while I am there (10 days) and see about getting some for my return home. I am hoping to get some Cohiba Siglo II to balance out an order that I recently received :cjump: especially since they do come in tubos and I am hoping that this keeps them more stable.. If I can find them I might try a Behike 52 (or two) and I am also looking at the H Upmann Connoisseur #1.

Right now my plan is to call the duty free in Hamburg and see if they can reserve what I need or visit the LCDH near my hotel.

If they're in tubes it will be a lot easier to maintain their Rh. Pick up a Heartfelt Humidity Tube or some WaterPillows, I suggest the beads though! Also, do you have a travel humi? I would suggest the Xikar X-Treme Cigar Humidor for traveling, you can't beat 'em! They have a small florist foam humidifier in there, but put a tube of beads in there and you can't go wrong. Both the beads and the WaterPillows can be re-charged.

Are you traveling back to the US? Make sure you're familiar with all embargo laws.

As for the humi in the duty-free, it all depends on the location.
