Newby needs help...

I hope I don't offend with some questions, I am new to cigars but have some questions about how to care for them.

Its winter here in the Midwest and I just purchased a humidor with a glass see-thru top. I have put the bead jar from xigar in along with maintaining moisture on the foam pad that came with the humidor. My humidity gauge only reads just above 60 and is slightly less than the "optimal" range. I have tried everything but can't see to get in any higher. The reason I mention its winter is, everything here is dry and I am guessing that is the issue or that the glass top is leaking slightly. Just want to make sure this is normal.

Also, I have purchased a few sample packs of cigars to find what I like. I have been putting them in the humidor with the plastic wrapping on the cigar.. Is that correct? Sorry, I warned you I was new to this.. just want to make sure I am caring for them correctly.

You probably need to season your humidor before you ruin your smokes. The easiest way IMO is with the Boveda 84% seasoning packs. Just empty out your humidor and throw in one pack per 25 cigars your humi can hold, shut the lid and leave them in there for 14 days. After 14 days it will be perfectly seasoned. Also, you should get a digital hygrometer that you can calibrate so that you can be sure that your RH level is accurate. Or, to get the most bang for your buck with basically no upkeep or stress, get a big ziplock bag and some Boveda 69% packets. Super cheap, super easy to maintain, and as long as the bag is closed and the Bovedas aren't dried up you will have perfect smokes.

Seasoning the humidor is definitely crucial. I had always used the Xikar jars as a humidifier but recently switched to Boveda packs. They are just so much easier and there is so much less to worry about. And form what I have learned about this group is questions are welcome and there will always be guys to help you out! Also. If the humidor came with an analog gauge replace it with a digital you can calibrate or put an additional digital one inside.

Just get yourself a tupperware and some boveda packs call it a day! A lot cheaper and less stress.

Check the top of the humidor for any leaks, especially if it's a cheap knock off humidor.
