I remember when the original Nica Libre's were released over a year ago. I noticed them right away in the catalog and posted about them. They looked very attractive and compared themselves to Padron. Though they don't taste anything like a Padron, the general consensus was that they were a good cigar at a great price.

I just got the latest CI catalog and noticed they are releasing a sequel. Nica Libre Potencia.

Hopefully they will post some deals of these soon on JoeCigar.com

Saw the ad in the Christmas catalog and was curious myself. While the Nica Libre was a decent cigar, they are no Padron. Maybe the Potencia will be a little closer to the mark :dunno:.

Doubt it. But I wouldn't doubt that it is a good cigar. Its a fuller bodied Habano. Looks pretty good. Will have to keep an eye out for a deal. Though I have enough cigars to last me for a year and a half. I feel guilty buying new cigars. haha.

I have read that these are supposed to be a poor man's Padron but I have been reluctant to splurge.

What say you good people? Should I?

Just smoked one today.

It was good except for a section towards the end that tasted absolutely wretched.

I'd recommend buying a couple of singles rather than jumping on a box purchase.

Go for it, pick up a 5er or some singles. They're decent cigars, but Padrons they are not. They're pretty cheap if you buy a box, otherwise if you spend a little more you can get an actual Padron. Personally I'd rather spend the little more :dunno:.

You guys have convinced me. No box purchase on these babies. Padrons are my first love. Nica Libre....might get a fiver and a fiver of padrons. Compare. Bet Padrons are better .

Nica is a fairly decent budget smoke, IMO. Other than appearance, they don't really compare to Padron. Not bad with coffee and a newspaper, or for those times you aren't going to pay that close of attention to your cigar. I've bought a couple of boxes and they tend to be pretty inconsistent.

No similarity between these and Padron... other than the box-press, the vitolas, and the fact that they use the same seed wrapper as the 64. No similarity in taste. I have had pretty mixed experiences with them as well. Lots of them plugged really badly.

They do not compare to Padrons...period! However, they are a decent smoke and for me, the San Andreas Valley Morron wrapper does it for this cigar. Tried one right off the truck yesterday and it was very decent (8 out of 10), but, I think they will get better with age. Am anxious, like other BOTL's to try the Potencia. Should be a good smoke if they are anything like the other Nica's.

I've been through about a box and a half of the regular Nicas and have never had a construction issue. In fact, quite the opposite.

IMO, the flavor isn't anything exceptional, however I do find them to be very enjoyable and better than a lot of other budget sticks.

These have been hit or miss for me. I would agree they are nowhere near a Padron. Their price isn't a great savings either unless you see them on a big sale, they just seem to do that regularly.

I got a box of the Nica Libre Principes this summer. OTT they were a little bitter with a hint of ammonia. After a few weeks they definitely got smoother. They have a little hint of the Padron flavor mainly because of the wrapper. For $2 a stick they were pretty good but not a Padron. If I got some more, I'd let the rest over winter and try them next spring or summer. Since I don't smoke as much in the Winter I'd get a box but I already have a coolerdor full of boxes of other smokes I'm letting rest.

Anyone try this particular Nica Libre blend, e.g. the Potencia? CI currently has these showcased in their Weekend Spotlight.
I find them interesting. Just with the short budget and other cigars that are up higher on my shopping list, I don't think I'll get around to trying these for a while.

I actually liked the regular Nica Libre line quite a bit, so this is something I'm eager to try out.

Nica Libre was a pretty great, flavourful stick for something that cost less than $2.
