Thoughts and prayers to those in the path of the massive tornado that hit near Oklahoma City today. Things are looking pretty grim at this point, 50+ dead including at least 7 from an elementary school where supposedly 70 students and teachers were riding out the storm.

Anyone know of any local botl's who may have been affected?

My mom is working at one of the hospitals down there. She texted to say she's okay but said its really bad down there. Hospitals are packed with people coming in injured.

I don't believe this was the case. There had been tornados the day before as well, and numerous forecasts of severe weather in the area. I believe for the Moore area that appeared hardest hit, they had somewhere in the range of a 12 minute warning of the actual tornado, not to mention NOAA took the rare step of issuing a tornado emergency as well.

I'm a bit more of a weather nerd than most, but even I knew the potential for strong storms was present in tornado alley yesterday, and I live over a thousand miles east of Oklahoma. For anyone to say they had barely any warning suggests they simply weren't paying attention.

(this is not to diminish just how awful this was or blame any of the victims - the scale of this ended up being beyond anyone's wildest imaginations)

Ok, I live in Oklahoma City. These storms come through every year around this time. What you have to remember is life doesn't stop. People work and kids go to school. The storm cells start off with conditions that are favorable for tornadoes, then they develop a hook and you hope the velocity does not increase. Eventually they hit the ground. When they do everyone seeks shelter. When it gets enough speed and debris to be an F4 shelter no longer helps. People do not have enough notice to leave work, pull kids from school, and get the hell out of the way. If everyone did that for all bad storm warnings in the metro area we would work less than France.

Yea, I don't think that's what Brent was saying. He was just clearing up the fact, that someone said there may have been no warning. Which in fact, there was. Horrible situation all the way around. Truly terrible.

Oh absolutely - as I say, definitely wasn't intending to blame the victims or take anything away from just how bad this ended up being. I watched the Channel 4 stream online for most of the day and their forecasters/chasers were on top of the situation from the outset. Not saying there was enough time to pack up and get out of the way, was just making a point to say that 'barely any warning' was not the way I perceived it.

Lets face it, when you have something that size coming towards you, what can you really do with 12 minutes warning? Could you do much more if you had 20?

edit - not to beat a dead horse, but this is from CNN today:

The storm struck near Newcastle, Oklahoma, at 2:56 p.m. Monday -- 16 minutes after the first warnings went out, according to the National Weather Service.

Moore residents had another 30 to 40 minutes before the massive storm entered the western part of the city, CNN meteorologist Sean Morris said.

As Gov. Mary Fallin had said Monday night, Lamb said he believed residents had time to prepare for the storm.

"My understanding is that the warning system was good. It was adequate," he said.

I've been watching the news on this as well and it almost brought tears to my eyes. The loss of life is tragic and especially when children are involved. I think that in areas like that when bad weather such as this is in the forcast schools should be closed. Also that is the third major tornado to whip through that area in less that a decade I believe. I know if I lived there a proper storm shelter would be my highest priority. Just terrible news and my heart goes out to all those who were affected. Prayers to the loss of life and a way to move forward for these people.
