- Feb 23, 1945 : The US flag was raised by a group of Marines on the top of Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima. Hours later, a second, larger flag was raised by three Marines and a Navy Corpsman. The scene was captured on film by AP photographer, Joe Rosenthal, who won a Pulitzer Prize for it. It also became one of the most reproduced photos in history.
