Is it common to receive an order from a reputable seller with the box opened? For example, if one ordered a box of 15 that comes in a larger factory box with a tax stamp on it, have you seen the manufacturer (not the seller's) box opened upon receipt?

Thanks for any info & reasons for this...

Yes, very common...in fact many appreciate them being opened and inspected prior to shipment.

You can always request them not to, but it is my understanding that they are doing you a favor, i.e., you wouldn't want them to send you damaged or contaminated cigars now, would you?

Also, some people want them opened because they prefer a specific shade of wrapper.

Fred- THANK YOU for relieving me of my concern! Being my suspicious self, I thought for sure there was some nefarious reason (i.e. taking out the authentics and replacing them with fakes), but I couldn't believe that a vouched-for seller would pull such a thing!

(So far at least one of the cigs was damaged: peeling edge-leaf). Any recourse?

Big Apple Legal,
Rough handling or dry? In either case most vendors will stand behind their product, for one stick most will always agree to a replacement stick with next order N/C ( they will almost always send several more than requested). A lot depends on the vendor and even more depends on the relationship you have developed with said vendor over time. The good ones will always come through without any effort on your part after reporting your displeasure.
PM me if you want more detail.

Openeing the box ensures a couple of things:
The box of cigars meet any Q/A on the vendor side. It doesn't do the vendor any good to ship out crap to a customer because padd press travels like wildfire. How would you feel if the said box landed on your doorstep after waiting 2 weeks and the damn things are ruined? You would have to wait a long time for that box to make it back to the vendor and for them to ship out another box.

If it's caught early the vendor can send it back for credit on his next order and save everbody the headache.

Cliff pointed out that some people like a paticular shade of wrapper. I like certain cigars to have a really dark wrapper and others to have a lighter shade. If they didn't open the boxes it would be a pig in a poke when it comes to getting what you want.

What's important is what's rolled up and put in the box, not what's on the outside. If you really trip on what's going on with all the little idiosyncrasies, you'll miss the whole experience.

I can't add much to what has already been said here Ben. I like to have my cigars inspected before shipment. Yeah, it takes away a bit from the feeling of opening up a box of smokes for the first time when all of the seals are broken, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I would also say if you get a box and one stick has a slightly cracked foot, I wouldn't say anything to the vendor. Stuff happens you know! If the condition of the cigars is generally good, just a few minor defects, I don't make a fuss about it. But most vendors will stand behind their product and take care of you. Some will ask you to ship the box and it's contents back, others will just send you a new box, depends on the vendor.

What Kevin and everyone else said. But I'd like to reiterate. Please, PLEASE don't make a fuss with a vendor over one cigar with a cracked foot (or similiar minor damage). All you succeed in doing with that kind of action is contributing to a reason for said vendor to raise prices or downgrade the amount of service they offer their customers to stop having to deal with such "piddly-ass stuff". No offense meant. NOW, if it's a problem with a number of cigars and or an overall problem with the box, that's a completely different story.

I usually order with the box opened but on occasion I'll get one sealed. Does anyone know how often a box is bad/damaged etc. Are your chances of getting damaged smokes high?

It really depends on how high/low humidity the vendor stored the cigars and also how they packaged them for shipping to combat the elements in the air and on the ground.

In my experience, different vendors do different things. I love the feeling of being the first to cut the seal on a box. However, I've never dealt with opening a box and seeing a bunch of damaged sticks. Actually the one vendor that always opens them also takes a photo of them as is. I can understand reasons for both. :blob:
