Okay Gents, To some of you this thread may be blasphemy, however I have been sorely disappointed with my Opus X experience.

about two months ago I had my first Opus X...a perfecxion #2. It was a valentines gift from my lady that had been resting since February. The only thing I enjoyed about that stick was the pre-light draw which was amazing (lots of rich dark chocolate and sweet tobacco.) Unfortunately for me it was down hill from there. Burn was uneven and hot, flavors were blah, and it was so miserable I only smoked about half of it. I was really disappointed to say the least, and so was my girl friend who payed waaay over retail (close the $30) and had put a lot of thought into the gift.

So fast forward a couple months when I was in my local B&M and saw Opus X Perfecxion #2's for ~$13. I picked one up because I wanted to give it another shot. After all, I was concerned that perhaps my poor experience was chalked up to a bad stick or very humid ambient conditions. I let the new one rest a few weeks.

Yesterday I smoked this second #2. This one had a VERY loose draw, uneven and HOT burn, harsh flavors, and again just really disappointing. Now again, it was fairly humid out (~50%) and it was really hot out so I thought maybe I had again chosen the wrong time to smoke an expensive stick. So after only smoking 2/3rds of this #2 I pitched it.

As we started our fireworks I went in and grabbed another stick, this time I reached for a cheap go to smoke just to test the waters, thinking maybe that It was just too hot/humid out for a stick to burn right. I grabbed a $3 Nica Libre. It smoked perfect to the nub. Razor sharp burn, great flavor, cool smoke.

So here is my gripe: How is it that I have had two considerably bad experiences with an Opus X? I understand that there are a lot of variables in cigar smoking and that two sticks may not be a good representation of an entire brand or line, but I am REALLY going to have a hard time spending big money on another Opus X.

Thats just my two cents guys, so lemme know what you think.

imo there's alot to it...

most obvious, might not be your kinda stick!

deeper, i have noticed the last 2 runs of opus have been a bit weaker, not the same as years past... tobaco can be affected by the elements while growing, there is no certainty the crops will be the same year after year etc.

3. the hype factor... they were very difficult to get years ago and are more available these last 2 years, some folks say a not so good cigar is fantastic if it was a HTF...

so who's to say... i know i have had some fantastic opus and some garbage opus... i will smoke an anejo (same blend, different rapper) over an opus most of the time.

I find that its way easier to be disappointed when you put the ***** on a pedestal. That's not hard to do when the stick is expensive and rare.

It does confuse me that the hype continues, because while I have had great Opus X cigars unfortunately I have had many more less than great. That said, I do not want to slight the greatness of the Fuente family's contribution to the cigar world. I see it as my responsibility to the community of cigar smokers to smoke very few of these over-hyped cigars. So to the true Opus X lovers, your welcome.

I had an Opus X Super Belicoso XXX for the first time last weekend. They're pretty hard to come by in Southeast MI. Anyways, I thouroughly enjoyed it. It was by no means the best stick that I ever had, but it was definately worth it. I will be picking a few up this week when I make it to the westside...

Wouldn't you like to know?
One of those things where you have to smoke what you enjoy. There is nothing wrong with not enjoying a cigar. I personally love opus but get very little out of Padron or Cohiba and really dislike Davidoff. We will all get different things out cigars and even some of the great ones we wont like. Try them all and see what you like, then load up. :)

to each their own. personally i think they have gotten better in the last few releases where for a while i thought they were really dropping off. Size matters too. If you are still game, try a different vitola. maybe the petite lancero or the XXX? Also, Opus need to be sipped, do you smoke quickly?

I agree with this 100%

I still seek out Opus even though I have had some of them be garbage, because when you get a good one, it is great.

Although had a couple not so good ones over the years I still keep a few in the humi for special occasions.

So many varibles in a cigar from the crop itself, harvest, rolling, storage, weather, how one smokes it and so on that I get an occasional bad smoke from a lot of differant cigars that are my favorite.

Sorry for your exprience but like stated may just not be your smoke. Nothing wrong with that at all.

In fact like you I have had many $2-$5 cigars please me that a lot of the high end ones have not.

Most every Opus fiend I know say the '09 release has not been the best they've put out.
That said, I will still hunt and buy Opus. Some of the best sticks I've smoked have been Opus. Opus+age=craaaazy good.

I'll smoke a Petit Lancero any day of the week. :D

However, based on my friends that I trust, the 09's I'm buying are going down to age.

It has been my experience that fresh(er) opus (<1 yr) often need to be dry boxed. On the other hand, I think that at least the last two releases of opus look very promising. But, as has been said several times, to each his own.

Haven't had any real issues with Opus personally, and have had some phenomenal Opus but as with most things always use Public Enemy as your guide.

I think it also has to do with the vitolas year to year as well...For example, I have never been impressed with the Perf#2, (esp '09), but the Love Affairs from '09 were amazing, (I thought, and bought a box to put down)...

Agree with the Love Affairs brooks, they are amazing. One of the best cigars I have had in a very long time. I love my Opus, I get quite a few shit sticks, but as a whole I really love the brand.

There's some great replies in this thread so I'll comment on another part of your post. Dude! Your lady gifts you a $30 cigar and you can't even pretend to enjoy it for her sake? That's harsh bro. :glassesgr

I'm new to Opus as of last year, so I can't tell you whether they used to be better, but at least some of the vitolas are fantastic (IMO, obviously). I absolutely loved the Super Beli, and the Perfecxion X. The PL and the Love Affair didn't really do it for me.
