Black russian is a good drink I've had with an Opus PL.

A sweet stout aka milk stouts tend go to well with cigars. I think coffee stouts do as well. The higher alcohol ones work better because the roast character of the beer isn't as prominent usually. Port Brewing Old Viscosity or Older Viscosity would be a good try.

I could see maybe a sweet resiling but I tend to think whites don't pair up well with cigars. The often times citrus character seems like a clash of cigars for my tongue. Same goes for hoppy beers. Stay away from extreme hoppiness as that often times accompanies citrus or piney flavors. Certainly not something I find pairs well with smokes. I have a peat smoked beer (homebrewed) that's not hoppy at all and when that is paired with a cigar each of them are leaps and bounds better together than alone.

Rum is a classic, Scotches are good, maybe try some port, or tawny port. For a red wine Amarone is considered by some to be "off-dry" but it's not a cheap even for the cheap bottles. If I think of other things I'll post back.

I find that SWEET pairs well with ANY cigar...... sweetness seems to clear the palate extremely well when smoking a cigar (hence the very old common pairing of a port wine).

Try some of these:

Riesling wines (I prefer Germans from the Mosel region)

Amaretto cocktails (try mixing with ginger ale... or just Sprite even)

Sweeter rum cocktails (stay away from the spiced stuff and use coconut rum, Havana Club, etc... mix with fruit juices, Coke, Sprite, whatever...)

Hard cider beers (Some Irish and English ones still pack a good alcoholic punch but are quite sweet)

Sweeter beers in general (like a lot of Belgian stuff or even things like Honey beers)

On and on.......

Over the years, I've simply found that SWEET pairs VERY well with a cigar! Each puff after a sip tastes new on the palate.... each sip after a puff tastes new as well...... so you get the best experience out of BOTH of what you're enjoying!

I've also found that the OPPOSITE is true if you pair your smoke with something that has too much "meatiness," if you will..... A cigar doesn't go particularly well with a Guiness, Barolo, or shots of Bacardi 151 without a sweet chaser..... the flavors all meld together on the palate.

Just my observations over the years.......

I've recommended several sweet drinks to BOTLs and they just laugh at my apparent lack of manliness for enjoying a riesling or amaretto-ginger-ale with my Siglo VI....... but those who have actually TRIED it VERY seldom disagree that they make for a great pairing with cigars! If you're going out drinking with the boys... okay... go ahead and stick your chest out and pound tequila shots if you want............ but if you're paring with a cigar...... go with sweet stuff.

Cheers! :cbig:
I most often drink Strongbow Hard cider with cigars. Magners is also enjoyable.

Jim's rather verbose expose on the topic of sweet drinks is probably the most accurate summary you'll find, although I'd caveat that by saying I'd opt for more straight drinks than mixed drinks (not that type of "straight"...). In lieu of a rum cocktail, opt for rum neat. Same with any speyside single malt, and stronger lowlands. Those two go very well with Dominicans in general, as well as most Cubans. Rieslings work well (concur on Germany, ht Jim), so does the amaretto concoction.

The only thing Jim probably missed was madeira... although he was close with his port reference.

If you want to try a Rum "Neat" try Zaya Rum!
