We all know we are losing our WWII vets at a rapid pace.....today I attended my Great Uncle's funeral. He was my Dad's Uncle (my grandma's brother) and my Dad and son's dearest fishing buddy. He will be sadly missed!

Just thought I would let you guys know a little about him as he was a hero:

John "Perry" Yengich. 85 years old and active till the end.

United States Marine Corps in the Asian Pacific campaigns, Saipan and others.
WWII Victory Medal; American Defense Service Medal; Asiatic Campaign Medal; and the Bronze Star!

The 21 gun salute brought everyone to tears!

RIP Uncle Perry!:usaflag:

People forget just how vicious the fighting was in the Pacific Theater. The Japanese fought to the death, there was no surrender.

RIP. :usaflag:

My grandpa, Jack Lloyd, also would have been 85 this year and he too was a Marine (fighter pilot, Grey Ghosts) and was in the Pacific as well as Europe.

Several years ago he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery which was the most somber experience of my life. He was my hero.

Those men were just a different breed, tough as nails and brave as hell.

Thank you for sharing, Mike. RIP Uncle Perry! :usaflag:

My father fought at Bastogne and all the way to Berlin, then went to Japan as part of the occupational force.

Sorry for your family's loss Mike, but his service was and still is greatly appreciated. I got a chance to go by the WWII memorial last month when I was in DC. It is a very dignified and long overdue memorial and should be attended by anyone who gets the chance.

Thanks for sharing Mike. Honor, courage and service to nation. My Dad was a Korean War vet and he always made us stand when a WWII vet went by.

I respect anyone who has fought for freedom. WWII was a tough conflict that cost countless lives ... but at least you could see who was the enemy.

These days it's very difficult to distinguish friend from foe.
