I blew up my collarbone skiing on Sunday and had surgery yesterday to piece it back together. It broke into 5 pieces. From what I’ve read I’m gonna have to curb my cigar smoking in order for it to heal properly. Anyone have any experience with cigar smoking and broken bones? Thanks.

Holy crap that's a bad break, hope you heal up quickly! I had no idea there was any correlation between healing and tobacco consumption. I've had broken bones a million years ago when I smoked cigarettes and wasn't told to stop nor did the healing take an abnormally long time. Healed up normally according to the docs.

I broke 3 ribs playing softball and took a 6 week vacation from smoking. I enjoy a pain free rib cage much more than I do cigars.
I think you're smart taking a break while you heal up. Long term health versus short term enjoyment is the way to go.

Good luck with the healing. As for the stopping cigar smoking I'm no health professional nor do i play one on tv but if the doctors not hovering over you blowing your lighting choice out.... I probably would smoke one. Or twenty.

I know this thread is a few week old. I had a neck fusion a little over a ago and the doctor had me quit smoking cigars 2 weeks before and at least 3 months after. I didn't smoke a cigar until I saw that my neck was fully fused. They used a cadaver bone where the blown out disc was and used a titanium plate to hold it together. The nicotine decreases the blood flow to the bone and keeps it from getting the nutrients it needs to heal. I wouldn't risk it. The cigars will be there when you heal. It also gave my palate a break which seemed to help when I started to back smoking again. Btw, I'm not a doctor, but I have a degree in Exercise Physiology and work in preventative medicine.

Good luck with your recovery!

I didn't realize there was a relation between healing broken bones and tobacco consumption. I snapped my collarbone in half a long time ago, and I remember the first few weeks were really rough. The smallest things, ie. getting in a sit up position from laying down, getting dressed, putting on deodorant, etc. we're extremely painful. I hope you have a fast recovery and you're healthy soon brother!

Cigar smokes gets in your blood stream even if you do not insane, as blood in flowing through your entire body. So some smoke displaces Oxygen, and creates bad stuff in your blood. I order to get faster hearding I understand why you were told lay off, or cut down on Cigars.

Oxygen promotes healing that is why in some burn units we use to put severely burned burn victims in high oxygenated enhanced chambers to promote faster healing. This was back in the 70's, and I am sure the proces has been carried on today.

Your broken need all the help to promote healing, and laying off Cigar is the exchange for a faster recovery.

JMHO based upon experience.
