I just got 2 5-packs of Partagas Serie D No. 4! This is my first CC buy, other than smoking a RyJ in Canada. I was wondering if they need to be stored at a different RH than my NC's (right now at 65-66%) and how long would you say is the average time to age them?

Thanks in advance!

i keep mine around 63-66%, it varies throughout the year. Put them in your humidor for a month. Smoke one when the time is up. If you like them then put them in your rotation. If not, then put them back to age.

They'll be fine with your NC's at 65%-66%. Smoke one now and see how you like them. As far as age, 3+ years would be a minimum in my book.

Is it just me, or is the consensus on CCs typically that they need to be aged much longer than most NCs? Like, I see BOTLs here recommending a minimum of three years on the PSDn4, which to me seems like a long time for a minimum age.

Trust me, cuban cigars now are very approachable young when compared to new cigars in the early 2000's. I always go by how they taste when you get them. If you don't like them then sample one every 4 months or so. When they're getting good to you, put them in your rotation.

This. Although I find I will often sample them earlier than four months. I hear the '08 versions are doing fine. . .:smokingbo For years I avoided "young" smokes, but no longer. Lots of great young cigars out there now.

Much of the NC stuff we get was aged well before it was rolled, so NC's need a lot less age to be good to go. CC's tend to be rolled with tobacco that is a bit more fresh. Thus a bit of age really helps some out. However I got a box of RASCC that I think was a 2010 box and they are just fine. Not as good at the box from 08, but that box is gone when I smoke that last one tonight.

I keep mine around 64 to 65% humidity.

As far as Sd4's go. This is one of the few cigars that I prefer young over aged.(not that I mind them aged either) I prefer to purchase them as young as possible, and smoke them until they reach their sick period. Believe me you will know when a PSD4 is sick. After that, it's best not to touch them for a couple of years. During that time. Buy another box and smoke them until they are sick. And repeat until the original box you purchased is around the 2 year mark and see if they are smokable again.

FWIW, mine with a box code of Nov09 aren't smoking well right now.
My SEP 09's are smoking well and have yet to hit the sick point.

I hope the more recent ones are smoking well as a "friend" of mine just made a purchase.

I do that with all the cigars I have. Seems like a good practice to rotate through and refer to my notes on how they smoked over time. Not just CC's but NC's too. Just my 2 cents.

I would say 3-5 years as well for the psd4s. But also I would agree with Cliff that some 08s and 09s are great with a year or more already. A guy I know with box of Party 898vs from feb 09 says they are hard to leave alone right now. If they are really good right now burn em. If there just ok throw them back for another 6-12 months. And as far as % I like 60-63%. If I take one out of the Vino at 65 it gets a few days of dry boxing.

Some are saying 3 years at 65ish percent. Unless you like a more British smoking experience(pop), the box code I'm smoking now, May 2006, are dynamite right now after being stored at 68 to 70% with 4 years in the box. Personal Opinion...by no means a professional consensus. Enjoy those fine pieces of work!

Revisited my NOV09 box and was pleasantly surprised. I don't like cigars over 3-4 years old (too mild tasting) so I'll try these again in a week or so and if they are good they are all getting a death by fire.

I keep all my Cubans at around 60%-62%...I just like how they smoke better when they are a bit dryer...

I just picked up some PSD4s from '98, and I am looking forward to seeing how they have changed in that time...(if they are not plugged! LOL!)
