Perfect Light

So I have noticed that when lighting my cigars, I have been toasting the foot properly but it seems like I always start off with an uneven burn. About 1/2 to 1 inch into the cigars, it appears to even it'self out. I am wondering if when light the cigar, i am either too close to the flame or one particular area is receiving more attention then another. I do roll the between my fingers when lighting, but i am wondering if one spot gets more attention. I will have to be mindful of that tonight when I smoke.
Just curious though, could the wrapper have anything? I noticed the one last night was a little veiny (sp).

Try blowing on the foot after you toast and check out the evenness of the cherry and touch it up if needed. Make sure all the edges of the wrapper are lit.

I have and it doesn't always work. How long do you typically roast the foot for? Maybe i am not roasting long enough.

Practice makes perfect. So just smoke more! Other than that, trust what was said.

Do you use a torch or soft flame? I find that I get a more even light with a soft flame, and that being said, I never toast the foot, simply light a cedar strip, get a big assed flame going and light that sucker up. But either way you said it appears to even itself out, so don't sweat it. Enjoy your cigar, don't worry about making it a science.

I'm no expert but I'll give what advice I can. Every torch lighter is a little different. Make sure you know how long your flame is. You may need to hold your light 2 inches away from the foot when toasting. I toast until the foot has been evenly heated then I take a couple light puffs while lighting and spinning the cigar. If you notice your cigar is starting to "run" (one side further down than the other) I'll lick my finger and put a little saliva on the running side right below the burn line to slow it down a bit and let the other side catch up. There's your advice from a newb.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the responses. I currently use a torch. I was using soft flame but didn't like the fact that the flame was always jumping. I have to smoke outside, so I guess it made it a little more difficult.

Chuck is right, that can definately make a difference, in my opinion.

That's what you WANT to happen, you don't want to have the flame on the end of the cigar, but rather 1/2 to 1" away and let the flame draw to the cigar.

Agreed. Even if lighting with a bic or something I never let the flame touch the cigar. Always at least an inch above...

well I lit a cigar last night and got a "perfect light". I took a little more time roasting the foot and i held the cigar a little farther away while rotating and taking some puffs!!!! I will try again tonight.
Practice makes perfect! I will not complain if I have to practice a lot either!! lol
