The guy is one of the best of his era. His neck is obviously jacked-up. He has a ring and he played his whole career in a city that adores him. He has kids, he is wealthy and he has career prospects beyond playing in the NFL...I could go on and on. Why doesn't he just retire? I mean, is it really worth it? It's not like he has a bad shoulder or a knee problem. IT'S HIS NECK! What do you fellas think? :)

I think he is finished and should be finished, no sense in risking permanent damage.

He had a great career albeit cut short, but stellar nonetheless.

He will get a TV gig in milliseconds due to his knowledge, career, wit, and humor - and still be part of the game he loves.

I live in Knoxville, TN where the University of Tennessee Vols are located. The rumor around here is that he is done and will not return to the NFL. I heard this from a real estate agent that I do Home Inspections for. She is friends with one of Peytons O-linemen from his days here. This is what he has told her, however this could all be just talk. I just figured I'd through that out there.

I believe there a quite a few that would argue he's not the best ever...only one ring stands in his way IMO.

I dont care about his stats.

I dont think there has ever been a quarterback who took such a suckass team, and turned them into contenders so fast.

Brady took an allstar team to multiple championships.

Manning took a bottom of the NFL team, and turned them into a perennial playoff team.

Without Manning, the Colts would have been the laughing stock of the NFL for the past 10 years. With Manning, they were one of the best.

and Montana had an excellent supporting cast, just like Brady.

How many true Hall of Famers or perennial all star players did manning have? maybe 2 or 3 in 10 years? and maybe is the keyword.

Indy had talent they had prowl bowl talent at the offensive line, running back, wide receiver and defensive end. To say he had no talent I don't think would be correct.

Best ever? Well this discussion needs a thread of its own; haha!

Stats are crazy I'll grant... but stats don't tell the whole story.

Montana has a 4-0 record in the Super Bowl. 11 Super Bowl TDs and ZERO Super Bowl interceptions.

Yes Manning has great numbers and has been around forever now... but he's also almost the LEADER for most interceptiopns in the playoffs (after being 9-9 there anyway)!

Post-season, Manning's career passer rating drops to number 9 in all-time history (Joe is 5th).

Point is... clinch time...... you want Montana...... and clinch time is what makes the great ones greatEST...... and wins rings.

Heck... even in the NFL's ratings itself (you know how they track the top 100 players of all time?)...... Joe is #4... Peyton #8.

Hall of Famer for sure... but best ever? I disagree.

It was a different time and a different game (like comparing Ruth or Mantle to Bonds or Jeter, ya know?)...... but I have to stick by Montana as the best QB to have ever laid hands on a football; 2nd to him is Johnny Unitas and THEN you can plug Manning in there - but hey............ I'm still with you...... retiring after playing for a town that worships him, a ring on his finger and the second or third greatest quarterback of all time (and certainly the best in the modern era)... is NOT a bad place to be...

I look forward to hearing the debate, though!

+1
Montana's leadership skills set him apart from most other quarterbacks and in my opinion is what made him one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

He won't be the same and is risking injury that could be way worse than what has already happened. Unfortunately he should retire.

I know the neck injury is a very different animal all together but for hard core football players it is not in the vocabulary to just retire early. I tore up my knees in high school so I did not even get to play any college and I so would love to just get out there and play now. I was helping coach my sons Pop Warner football and just being out there I want to put on pads and play again. I got 2 dislocated fingers in a game once and asked to coach to pull them into place and don't tell the team doc so I could play.

Now I do think he should walk away to risk a neck injury to leave him in a chair is not worth it, but if you were to ask most NFL players most would say when can I go back in......

Enjoy the debate!

There is a lot of speculation but as stated before, he is finacially sound, had a great carreer and definitly will get a gig in tv or coaching at the college level. First and foremost Manning is a competitor and if he thinks he can play, he'll be out there. If he does retire you'll see him on tv for a while but I wouldn't be suprised see him as a assistant coach at the college level.

Montana..the greatest in my life of football...period. Even though I grew up in the Bradshaw years to me Montana was and still is the greatest I've seen.
That being said my thought on Manning is this...
He holds football in higher regards than he does his own family or health. Some guys can't let go of there pride or chasing a dream that's just not going to happen. Manning to me needs to think of what he has now and what he could loose with his pride.
