Me and my fiance are taking about honeymoon destinations. We lime the idea of Mexico because Mayan ruins, clear ocean white sandy beaches and golf for me. She has been to cancun, I haven't been to Mexico other than tijuana. I know cancun is very americanized so I'm leaning towards playa del carmen. Has anyone been to PDC is it better than cancun for a honeymoon?

Me personally, I'd go PDC. You can find some resorts that feel pretty secluded, aren't crowded, and offer the other stuff you are looking for. I had my honeymoon there, and three other friends that all got married within a year of each other all went there, and based off each others recommendation, we actually all stayed at the same resort because they really went above and beyond because it was a honeymoon. What would worry me about Cancun would be the college crowd. Not criticizing that crowd, but it's not something I want to have to dodge on a honeymoon. Just my $.02

We stayed at Moon Palace last spring, which is about 40 minutes north from PDC. It was phenomenal

Incredible Spa, golf course and restaurants and a short taxi to down town Cancun where there is a nice LCDH. Fantastic sunsets

PDC is amazing. My wife and I went back last November, and we absolutely fell in love with the place. If you're at all adventurous, check out the adventure theme park "Xplor" - it's an absolutely amazing time!
This is the place we went - I can't recommend it enough.

We went to PDC on our honeymoon, too, and loved it. We actually stayed at the Iberostar in Riviera Maya. Beautiful resort, wonderful food and experience and we would gladly go back. It was a short ride into the actual town of PDC.

We got to the resort and just missed the complimentary tram to take us to our room and were told it would be half an hour until it would return. Then we were told to go sit in a big comfy couch and they'd bring us some drinks while we waited. I think we skipped the next two trams. :)

Both are very commercial.. if thats what youre looking for.. plenty of very pretty/nice resorts to choose from, etc..

That said, IMO there are better bangs for your buck than Mexico these days if youre wanting to do an international destination for your honeymoon..

Check out Costa Rica and Belize.. plenty of resort options similar to what youre going to find in PDC or Cancun in terms of amenities, attractions, quality, etc.. and both are far less "americanized" as you describe Cancun..

Cost of flights to Costa Rica are generally only about $100 or so more than most tourist destinations in Mexico.. and once you get there the cost of hotels, food, activities, etc.. are usually cheaper.. so that offsets the additional airfare..

Never been to PDC, but been to Cancun a half dozen times. Think you'll have fun wherever you go.

I would love to go to Belize, didn't think it would be a cheaper option. Hopefully the wife and I can do a vacation this year and that would be a great alternative.

From LAX to Cancun is $415 right now...

LAX to Costa Rica is $425... (essentially the same price)

LAX to Belize is $600 ($175 per flight more expensive)..

But.. overall I find Belize and Costa Rica both to be much cheaper.. excursions are less expensive, food is less expensive, hotels are less expensive, etc..etc..

Not knocking Cancun or PDC.. both are great.. but.. for me.. I prefer a few less gringo's walking around.. and more of a "local" feel, etc.. so I usually stay out of the more touristy cities and towns in Mexico.. and look further south for options...

Having been to almost every place in the Caribbean and Mexico there is a lot to be said for trying every one of them. I tend to lean towards PDC but Cancun has a ton of hotels with pristine beaches as well. I say research more and pick areas where you know you'd have a good match...food...excursions...privacy..etc.

I've been to both cancun and PDC multiple times, and hands down prefer PDC. We stayed at The Royal (adults only) resort. It's all-inclusive and the food was pretty damn good. If we go without the kids, we will go to PDC or Cabo (Dreams Resort), with Cabo winning out hands down. If we take the boys, we go to cancun and stay at Crown Paradise. We liked the location of the hotel in PDC. Close to everything and walking distance to Texas St (where all the shops, bars, restaurants, etc are). I've heard Belize is not near as nice as PDC or cancun, but would love to go to Costa Rica.
