Hey guys, I know I read somewhere on this board about pre-embargo Cubans. Oddly enough my cousin is in San Fran staying at the Fairmont and there is a cigar shop there that does in fact sell pre-embargo cigars. Here is the site. Unfortunately his cigar list doesn't work on his site, so I emailed him hoping he had a list. From the reviews on yelp and other sites, this store does get good reviews.

Did they find Kennedy's stash? How did they get enough vintage cigars to sell as a regular item in their store?

knowing san fran they are probably 1. selling them for absolutely insane prices per stick 2. continuously purchasing them from collectors at equally insane prices.

I'm not sure, as I am not there, but from what my cousin told me, the sticks range from $125-$10,000 depending on which ones. He's going to buy 2, so I will post some pictures once I have it.

Yea that's what I said. 10k. But for being that old, 1959, do they hold their flavors?

Yes they can and do. Storage conditions are important so he should make sure to smell and feel the cigar before buying. I wouldn't buy if there's little to no smell or it feels hard and/or dry and brittle.

The owner has a fairly big collection of pre-embargo cigars, rum, and pre-prohibition/prohibition era booze. He did lose a significant part of his collection back several years ago when his storage area failed, but the stuff he had was legitimate and quite pricey. He does work in AZ as well and while I can't vouch for everything he sells, what I have seen does not give me cause for warning.

Coronas also sells pre-embargo in store. Not a huge selection at any given time, but not many guys are walking in looking for a 200+ smoke. I'll break down one day, but my wife would kill me for the insurance money if I ever bought one.

I was out there a couple of years ago, and stayed at the Fairmont, and checked out this place. His stash was not impressive to me. None of the sticks had bands, and were in zip lock bags with scribbled sharpie writing on the outside of the bag. No boxes of anything. The bags were inside what looked like his humi. He had no list of what he even had. Being a bit new at the time, I couldn't tell if the smokes were legit or not. He said that he supplies the pre-embargo cigars at the French Laundry. The guy was really nice, and seemed somewhat knowledgeable. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't even consider it, mostly because I haven't had a single cigar that I thought could be worth anywhere close to $100-$200, and I've had some good ones. Royal Salomons, and BBMF's are pretty darn good, but are still not really worth the price to me. From a historical perspective, it could be cool to say you smoked one, but I just couldn't see dropping the cash. I would spend the $$ on some recent Behikes or cuban Monte's before I would drop dough on the ancient stuff. The Fairmont is a really cool hotel if you have the chance to check it out. Worth spending a night or two there, but once is all you need.

I've bought 2 sticks from there before and they were outstanding ('56 HdM coronas). They were pricey but got them for a special occasion (30th Bday). If you're in the area, I think it's worth it to give it a try. Once in a life kinda thing
