we give them out as gifts at my co. they are accepted anywhere you see a visa/mastercard/amex sign. we buy them online from wells fargo, but you can also purchase them in stores. you normally pay a fee for the card and charge it up. the visa ones we get have a limit of $500, but I know amex go up higher than that.

you can check the card's balance online, or by calling a phone number in the back.

edit: crap, I could have sworn you were asking about visa giftcards -- blame it on the wine I had last night :bottle: . never messed with prepaid credit cards.

Well I could buy myself a gift card. I basically don't want it to touch my credit report.

why not use a debit card?

edit: okay, this guy that works for me uses one. he uses it for online sportsbooks since the issuing banks of his cards block those transactions. he said he paid like $10 for his. you can load it up anytime you want by going to a check cashing place. you can pulse money out of ATMs, which gift cards don't allow you to. something to consider: the card takes out $1 per transaction. yikes!

but you can check the balance online or via telephone.
