Well I do agree that something needs to be done about drunk drivers, but I don't think this is the right approach.

Oh damn that sucks! WTH are they thinking? Do they want every bar in TX to go out of business? You can't go to a bar to get drunk...sheesh!

Sounds like another good reason for me not to go to Texas.

The other reasons, in order:

1:I went to basic training there, and I hated it.
2:It's really hot during the spring and summer.
3:Armadillos........need I say more?
4:See number 3.

In Virginia, the law states that, NO, you cannot get drunk in a bar, or anywhere else in public. You can get drunk at home, or someone else's home, and you cannot leave if you are drunk, otherwise you are intoxicated in public, which is a class4 misdemeanor.

"Arrest drinkers for being drunk?" isn't that an oxymoron or something?

I think this is crap too. I only drink over moderation at a bar where I've built trust with a good bartender.

the cops are pretty mellow around here. there are public intoxication laws, but as long as people arent creating any problems, they tend to be left alone.
in a nearby town where i used to live, there were 11 bars in a three block strip on the main drag. when the bars closed at 2:30 am, everyone at the bars ended up at the local cafe. police cruise past about every 5 min or so but they pretty much leave the drunks alone....

I have always known about public intoxication laws but thought they were to be used as a secondary type of charge like if someone was being obnoxious or disorderly they could fall back on that charge if needed.

I have never seen this type of law actively enforced as the sole offense.

I'm sure every state has public drunk/intoxication laws. But, to have them enforced in a bar in a whole 'nother story. I always hear of people getting arrested for being drunk and loud OUTSIDE the bar
