Hey guys, I'm RJ and I'm looking at getting into the cigar business. Although I'm young, I'm very passionate about my cigars, and would love to eventually open up a B&M. Until then, I've been reading about the different licensing requirements, and I see that an address is needed to become a tobacco retailer/distributor. For starters, I could use a little bit of clarification between the two, because just about every website I read up about this on says something slightly different, but my main question is this: do you need to have an actual store, or can I start out small-scale from home? Any and all information on start-up would be hugely appreciated!

Well first off welcome to the forum. Secondly I think we need a little more information before we can continue. I am sure this differs state to state. Please let us know that.

I have tried a few times to no avail unfortunately.. I looked online and there was a number to call but each time I've tried there was no answer.

Connecticut requires you to have a commercial business location to sell tobacco, and you must have a tobacco license for each retail location you sell, or transfer tobacco to or from. You will also need a sales, and tax permit.

To sell from your home it would have to be a commercial property. You would need to make sure there are no regulations on your property, your mortgage contract, or your insurance at the very least. Many mortgage agreements will not allow you to operate a business out of the property.

Online sales require separate licenses, tax forms, etc..

Thank you very much for the information jdwaynes, I really appreciate it, my property is residential, so I suppose the next step is going to be seeing if I can find a really cheap place to rent for start-up
