Yes, I do mean the legal definition.

I held back today, as I have no so called rare cigar in my collection.

Nothing saved for a better date, as my humidor has been filled with gifts BOTL's.

I have been gifted many hard to find cigars, and the choice is tough to choose a smoke anymore.

I offer my opinion/story on rare cigars.

For many years I held on to a pre-embargo cuban cigar, all that I know of the cigar is that my local B&M, upon new ownership, found them in the shop. The cigar was perhaps a lancero, the cello was almost golden.

I held on to this cigar for about a year, well things got rough, and one day this was the only cigar left in my humidor. One day I came home, can not even remember the date, I took it out and smoked it, times were tight and I wanted to smoke a cigar that night.

The flavors were mild, with a bit of musk, but that was a great night. I have to say, hold on to great cigars, one day they will make for a memorable evening. You never know what will happen!

What I learned, hang on to a rare cigar if you can, smoke what you purchase, cigars rolled in the past few years are meant to smoke, if you can afford to purchase an extra, save it, you never know when the time will come and that is all you have, and that makes for a great smoke.

Well Put. :applause:

Im just now getting to the point in my collecting where I have enough stock to let some sit for a while. I used to be I would only buy 5 to 10 singles a time and smoke them till I was out. Now, Ive got smokes for now and a few for a special time later.

What if that special time never comes? Would be a shame to save all these special smokes to look back some day and just wish you took advantage of the time you had.

That is why if it is in my Humi it is smokable, to me or anyone that enjoys a good cigar.

I have about 50 to 60 cigars that I will never smoke, these are the ones I give friends who come over, and have never smoked a cigar, and would not know the difference between a Montecristo and a Montecino.

That was deep 25. Changed the way I think a little...

At least there's plenty of holidays and birthdays every year to have a good reason to smoke something special

I myself have only had what could be called a collection of cigars for a couple months now. At the moment I have two 50 ct. humi's... one with HTFs that is tucked away for aging and one with others I grab from everyday. When a special day rolls around, I whip out the special humi and pick a treat!

I agree for the most part....except that my "special occasions" come a lot more frequently now. Like, several times a week. :nodlaugh:

I tend to fall in the camp of smoke em while you can. I like to buy boxes as opposed to singles so I can smoke the sticks I like and try to save a few back to age.

That is to say aging seems to me different than just saving them. I have little to no experience with aging as this is something I am just now starting to do but I am not doing it just to save them. I want to see how a smoke progresses as years go by. Ask me in 5-10 years and maybe I should have just smoked them, who knows.

Or better yet, if a person wants to collect, more power to them. If you want to smoke them, hell you only live once. Freedom of choice is an awesome thing.

Straight up, dude. As part of various compromises with my wife and my doctor I only smoke a couple cigars a week. That makes every damn one a special occasion. :)

I'm not against holding something back for special times with special people, but shoot, don't forget about today.

:thumbsup: Life is short. Smoke em if you got em. Remember; the bus is always just around the corner. Sometimes it picks you up and sometimes it hits you. We never know which it will be. Cigars smooth out those harsh times, make the good times better, bring you new friends and are meant to be enjoyed.

i have to say, an aged premium cigar IS the special occasion.

i heard this long ago from someone, that when you keep something and build something up sometimes it might go too long, waiting for some special moment to smoke/drink it, i try not to forget that smoking cigars is one of my personal passions, and hey, every one i light is one hell of an occasion!

There isn't a cigar out there that creates an exclamation point in life, no special cigar that makes things go from gray to bright and there is no cigar out there that will take away the blues.

A good cigar will however make you relax and unwind...will make you a little more comfortable in your skin and give you a chance to rethink something and get a new insight.

Agreed 100%

I have special cigars in my collection, but they can be smoked on any day. Some have been and others will be soon enough. As others have pointed out if you die tomorrow someone will have gotten the fruits of your labor. I dont think I have anything in my collection that I have not smoked outside of the singles I have aquired through trades which are all sloted over the next month or two. If I like them enough I will go find more. If I cant then it was not meant to be. NO CIGAR IN MY HUMI IS SAFE! When I open the door they all have an equal chance of death. Hell I have gifted rare stuff which I knew someone would enjoy more then me do to my preferences.

As to the tuff times the OP talked about. I can totally sympathize. Times are pretty lean for me these days. I think thats part of the reason why no cigar is safe. I realized I just need to enjoy what I have. There will always be something great around the corner.

I do plan to have more 'special' cigars on major events (important birthdays, holidays I care about, ends/beginnings of semesters), but there's nothing keeping me from saying 'Know what, I'm busting out ________ tonight.' If it's there, it's there for me to smoke. The only aging I do is due to buying at a rate equal to or greater than my smoking practices...lol

I had a good friend a few years back that collected cigars. He was always very generous and interestingly, I seldom saw him smoke a rare cigar... but he would gladly give you one. This is the kind of guy that could afford to and did treat me several times to a vintage cuban and a snifter of Louis XIII at "the club". Despite that, I used to think he was full of BS when he would say, 'by the way, that's a 20 year old cuban you're smoking"....He had a heart attack at 48 on an airplane coming back from Vail. His wife called me several months after the funeral and asked if I wanted his cigars.... so I went to the house and found a cabinet humidor with about 20 boxes of mostly cuban cigars, some dating back to the 60's. While organizing them and boxing them up, I got so sad that I had to stop for about 20 minutes before continuing to pack them up. In the ten years I knew him, I NEVER saw this guy smoke one of those cigars.... he saved them for his friends. He created "the experience" for others.
I smoked or gifted every single one of those cigars over the next year ... by giving one away to someone else every time I smoked one... I gave them to guys who had no idea what they were as well as guys who could look at them and say, "Holy shit, do you know what this is....where did you get this?"

Every once in awhile.. I will be digging through my stash and I will see a "rare" cigar that I haven't smoked yet... because I was saving it for a special occasion... and I stick it in a bomb......and it makes me feel great knowing that someone else will enjoy it as much as I would have......

My point is this: There are always more cigars.... they may be different, but every year, more "rare" and HTF cigars come out..... smoke the ones you have... and simply make the act of smoking it... a special occasion.
