my grandma gave me some old coins tonite and i was wondering if any of you collect or know somebody who collects old coins. ive done a little research online but still dont know for sure what i have. i believe they are Peace Silver Dollars. 2 from 1921 and one from 1923. according to what i found, they were the first minted to commemorate the end of WW1. any info would be appreciated.

The one thing that I've heard is that no matter how tempting it might be, do not clean them! Cleaning coins, no matter how gently, will only devalue them (or so I've been told).

You should be able to pick up a handbook that will tell you everything that you want to know. Let us know what you find out.

I've been a coin collector for many years...the value of the coins would depend on the year, the mint mark, and the condition...if you had a rare date/mint mark combo and it was in decent condition it could be worth a few bucks...most common date peace dollars in worn condition tend to only be worth a slight premium over current silver value...so any answer sorta ends up being "it depends"...

Note that in 1921 there were Morgan head dollars and Peace dollars. After 1921 the value is very little as Neuromancer states. If they are 1921 Peace dollars with the new "Peace" head, then they might be worth a few bucks. I just sold some 1921 Peace dollars for $50 each. They were in very good condition and also came from my Grandmother. For you numismaticists, "very good" does not mean the industry usage of the term. I had actually cleaned one of the coins and still got $50 for it. To my unpracticed eye they were in very good condition. Part of the value will depend on the mint mark.

Like they said, condition is everything. Rarity helps, but if they have been just thrown in a drawer and mixed with other coins, they will be worth less than mint or unused condition. You may want to look in the yellow pages under coin collectors. Have a couple different ones look at them. Jewlers or even pawn shops may be of some help.

Mint marks also influence value.
