I read on here that for a newbie, the Ronson jetlight was not a bad lighter. And they do a decent job of lighting although it seems I get about 4 cigars lit out of them! Bought a refill bottle and for the life of me I can't get it to refill! I'm on my second lighter as I tossed the first thinking something was wrong. But the second one is just as stubborn. I vent the lighter to purge any remaining pressure, then turn the lighter upside down and attempt to recharge with the refill container.

This ain't rocket science but nothing seems to happen. I hear no noise (which I would think would happen if the gas is being charged) and no noticeable change in the lighter weight (or ability to light for that matter)

Have I gotten 2 bad lighters? A bad refill bottle? The bottle blasts out gas when you push the tube so that seems to be fine. And I can't find any "venting" screw or anything on the lighters.

Perhaps I should just buy a decent lighter??

Recharging any lighter at times can be a PIA...it can be as simple as the butane itself with the nozzle. There is one butane I use w/o fail and the nozzle pretty much works all of the time...Vector and it's the 5X butane. You have to ensure that when you refill that the nozzle has to be perpendicular to the lighter....sometimes if you just put the lighter on a flat surface and then put the nozzle into the orifice and push straight down you can get a good charge/refill. If you don't then you'll hear and see the butane spew all over the place and you might as well start over because you've just refilled partially with air and that is going to cause more issues.

The way you vent the lighter is by pressing on the insert until ALL butane is gone...you might have to do this a few times. Once the butane is all out adjust the screw until it is almost all the way closed. Recharge the lighter with 8 seconds of butane...wait 3 seconds and recharge again for another 4 seconds. Wait for a couple of minutes and adjust the screw about 1/4 turn. Press the button to light your lighter and if it doesn't light turn the screw another 1/4 turn and try again. Adjust the flame to your liking.

I've seen this around for a lot of years and it pretty much coincides with what I say...some will charge for 8 seconds others 10. The important aspects of recharging is to use GOOD fuel...don't charge at an angle.

1. Select a quality brand butane to refill your lighter with. You can find refill cans almost anywhere you can purchase cigarettes. Look for bottles that come with metal tips instead of plastic ones.

2. Choose a place to refill the lighter that is well ventilated.
3. Set the flame height adjuster on the lighter to the lowest level. The flame height adjuster should be on the bottom of the lighter. Use a small flat head screwdriver and turn the screw clockwise to lower the flame. The minimum setting is near the minus sign on the adjuster.
4. Release the air inside the lighter by pushing down on the refill lever with the screwdriver. You will know when all the air has been released because all hissing will stop. The butane can not go into a lighter if the lighter is full of air.
5. Do not fill the lighter at an angle. This will let air into the lighter tank. Air in the lighter will cause the lighter to not work properly. It will have to be drained and refilled.
6. Shake the can of refill fluid.
7..Secure the tip of the refill bottle into the refill valve on the lighter. Make sure you are holding the lighter and refill bottle straight up and down. Sometimes the bottle tip does not form a secure fit with the lighter's valve. If this is the case with the butane you have selected, there are tip adapters available. Most butane refill bottles come with the adapter.
8. Fill the lighter for about 5 seconds. Repeat for another count of 5. You will know the lighter is full by checking the butane level viewer that is on most lighters. Lighters that are filled too full will overflow.
9. Set the desired flame height by turning the adjuster with the screwdriver. The height of a good flame should be about 1 to 1 1/2 inches.
10. Test the lighter. Wait a few minutes for any spills and fumes to dissipate. Hold the lighter at a safe distance from your face and try to ignite the flame. You may need to add more butane if the flame does not catch. Do so by repeating the steps above.

Appreciate all the answers. I was able to get a good refill after going through these steps. Now to dig through the trash and find the one I tossed :sadpace:

As a newbie, I was excited to find this thread as I have two lighters and neither of them work. I tried the above twice on both lighters and used compressed air to blow out the carbon deposits, but still no flame. One I get nothing on at all and one I get a faint flame for just a second and it goes out. Any other suggestions to get these things to go?

Thanks

Noobie lighter or not, I love my Ronson lighters, and see no reason to spend over $3 for a lighter when these things are readily available, and work like a charm, especially if you spend 1 minute, and open it up, remove the spring, and the c-washer thingy to increase flame output.

I also second this! Also I have 5 ronsons but I've found that for some reason maybe by Coincidence that the gun metal grey seems to function and be higher quality then the others... Just my 2cents

I have a nicer single flame that I got with a CI order, and I had never seen the jetlites anywhere until I was on vacation last week. I bought one right away and haven't had to refill it yet! It works great so far, and I am less worried about falling in the lake with it like I did with the last one (I tore my rotator cuff in the process) I might try filling it before leaving town today with my travel humi
