I have my very first firearm headed my way!! (Smith & Wesson M&P FS 9mm w/ crimson trace grip) I am doing all I can to learn as much as possible to safely and responsibly own a gun. One of the aspects I've been a bit overwhelmed with is cleaning supplies for the gun. I've seen all kinds of solvents and cleaners and kit with all types of pads and brushes. I was hoping y'all could point me in the direction of some highly recommended kits and solutions. Also feel free to tell me if I need to stay away from any brands. Thanks in advance for the suggestions. Feel free to ask any questions if I left out some needed info.

EDIT: I fount thishttp://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=1068&highlight=cleaning thread but there were not many responses. I have looked at the OTIS kits but there are many types and I'm not sure if I should look at a specific one.

While autos tend to get a little dirtier than some, it's easy to get over zealous with cleaning. A fast and easy method with this gun would be to remove the magazine, slide and barrel to open the grip frame. Patch the barrel with a 38cal rod and patch and one of the many good copper remover cleaners. I like Shooters Choice. Set it aside while you clean the slide and frame. Apply some cleaner to a loose patch and wet the slide inside where it is blackened and let is rest.
You can get tedious here with a brush and solvent on the frame but in most cases just take a can of Gun Scrubber and hose it down. You can safely spray the Gun Scrubber to knock the loose fouling out and soak the hard-to-get places. I prefer to then blow the frame dry with an air hose but you can wipe it down and let it air dry.
Now go back and run a couple dry patches through the bore followed by a very lightly oiled patch. Scrub or spray the sliide clean and again blow dry or wipe it down and air dry.
You might want to lube the slide just a little with a graphite based lube but go very, very light with oil applied to any of the trigger/safety pivot points. Oil collects dirt. Unless I'm storing a gun for a long time I don't oil it all after using Gun Scrubber. I do like to wipe the outside metal parts with a silicon cloth like Outters for good protection. That was easy!
