OK, so I got back into pipe smoking from a 2 year break and learned how to retrohale pretty quickly. Today, I had my first cigar in about that same amount of time and tried to retrohale and damn near died.

So, heres my question: my pipes tend to "burn" my tongue yet I can retro all day no issues. Cigars rarely if ever burn in the mouth but try to kill me when I retrohale.

What gives?

Also, I understand that the pipe smoke is supposed to be a little cooler but it doesnt explain the mouth burn

Not to mention it is all condenced to one small hole and usally directed in the same location in your mouth. And some cigars are just blended diffrently and can be spicyer i have noticed that usaally not in all cases maduros seem to be smoother for the retro

It's either the blend or the volume. Some just have stronger sensations. A full DPG or RoMa, especially right after they're lit, can really pack a punch. Let the stick settle in a bit first. Temp's a factor too. Try it after your cigar has been set down for a little while.

I'm a big proponent, in general. I don't feel like you get the whole profile without the occasional retro.
