As I pulled this cigar out of the humidor, I couldn't help but notice the heft of this 6x46 smoke and its beautiful dark wrapper. The cigar was firm to the touch, throughout its length, and all indications were that this was going to be a great one, as its first impression was impressive.
Clipped with my Xikar, I slowly toasted the foot of this cigar and took in a pleasantly sweet aroma. I poured a few fingers of Remy VSOP and sat back to enjoy. The first few pulls were meeting my expectations, thick, creamy white smoke and effortless draw. The wrapper's sweetness on the lips laid the foundation for the taste of the smoke as I got the cigar going. Half an inch in, I picked up leather, bittersweet chocolate, white pepper..... and a little harshness on the finish. The ash was firm and almost white and held for 2.5 inches before dropping off.
Unfortunately, by this time, I had lost the spice and chocolate nuances.....they were replaced with an earthy finish that reminded me of damp peat. It wasn't unpleasant; but I have to admit, I expected this cigar to build in complexity and it did not. (I think the fact that I was not drinking my normal accompaniment: single malt scotch, helped save this one too.)
The final third remained true to the rest of the cigar... consistent flavor, dense smoke, firm ash.... and enjoyable. It started to burn a little crooked here, but it corrected itself quickly. I did not get the harsh bitter nic buildup that I often get in the final throes of a cigar, so I have to give this one another thumbs up for that.
I smoked this one to the nub.
This cigar was perplexing. Great construction. (I only ashed it twice!) Beautiful appearance. Nice finish. Dense smoke. Nice aroma. So much potential. On the other hand, it was one dimensional. A little too earthy and lacking complexity. Would I buy it ....probably not? I would hire the guy who rolled it though... and I'd love to try it in another vitola. Here's how it broke down for me:
Appearance: 14/15 - Got to give it the nod here... it looks tasty!
Ash: 10/10 - Strong here too.
Draw: 9/10 - No complaints.
Burn: 9/10 - Almost perfect.
Smoke: 9/10 - Dense and creamy.
Flavor/Blend: 13/20 - Major letdown here. I expected more. It teetered on the edge, but never delivered.
Uniqueness: 6/10 - The only thing unique about this cigar was how well it was made.
Finish: 12/15 - Nice finish, all the way to the nub, but needed more flavor.

This is the last cigar in this series. I would be remiss in my reviews if I did not thank Benzo for putting this together. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed reading the other reviews and comparing them to mine. The added dimension associated with smoking for a review, which forces you to really "bond" with the cigar and dissect it, was also a learning experience... and reminds us that each smoke is a unique creation made by hand, solely for our personal enjoyment. There aren't too many other things in life that you can say that about.
