So, after herfing with some absolutely great guys Friday, I was inspired by Jfire to start doing some reviews. For two purposes really, one to help develop my own palette, as I am still very new to putting what I am finding when smoking into words, and two to get the board talking more about the cigars we actually smoke. Love the contests and bombs, but time to circle the wagons and get back to the cigars. So without further ado, here's my second take and a review with a cigar I absolutely loved last year, and was interested in seeing if it was warranted to go all in on a jar purchase.
Tatuaje Black Corona Gorda Jar Release
Vitola: Corona Gorda 5 5/8 x 46
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Sun Grown Criollo Estelí
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Wrapper Look and Feel: Beautiful milk chocolate brown, with some definite veins throughout and noticeable tooth to boot, nice sheen from the oils.
Age: Just purchased this past weekend
Pre-Light Aroma: I was not able to get a ton of aroma off the wrapper on this, I got only a faint barnyard smell.
Cut: Normally I use a double guillotine for my cuts, but I wanted to try something different with this cigar, so with the unique cap this cigar has, which I really love the look to it, I tried using a finger nail to peel away the triple cap. It looked as it might be easy with some care taken and would allow enough to have a quality draw. Successful.
Cold Draw: Again, I didn't have many clues in the cold draw as to what the cigar would entail. Very faint tobacco flavors. The draw provided just enough resistance, easy but not on the side of loose.
1st Third: The smoke kicks off with a very enjoyable leather flavor. This flavor dominates for about the first half inch with some nuttiness and milk chocolate in the far background. There is almost no spice to this cigar in my opinion besides this first third. It's not the in your face kind of spice, but more one that sits at the back of your throat, not much but you know it's there. The leather midway morphs into an extremely enjoyable dark fruit flavor. This cigar is really on point to start off. The burn is razor sharp and has that mascara type line that denotes the burn line, love it. The ash so far is holding strong without any help from me.
2nd Third: The second third changes on me a little with an very tasty milk chocolate flavor that's evident for at least 4-5 puffs. After the initial puffs in this third in returns back to the dark fruit flavor so prevalent in the first third. An awesome flavor for this smoke I must say. The ash fell off not too far into this third, and continued on an inch at a time after that. The room aroma on this cigar is one of the best I've ever experienced and the smoke coming off is very plentiful, not Liga-like but darn near close.
Final Third: Somewhere between the second and final third, another change in flavor occurred. At first I couldn't pinpoint it, but then it hit me like a brick wall. Buttery caramel. WOW!!! This third was delicious! It held this flavor throughout this entire third, toning down a little towards the end. Not once did this cigar require a touch up as it burned with perfection.
Summary: Everything from the Black CG that I smoked last year was completely reinforced. I thought this cigar was possibly the best one to come out last year, and I feel the same way for 2014 so far. Very very complex smoke that never leaves you bored. I feel this cigar is a solid medium when it comes to strength, but wow does it dominate when it comes to flavor. This is the kind of cigar that is right up my alley. I bought this cigar as judge to whether or not I should buy a whole jar. Easy easy decision! Get out now and find as many of this stick as you can!!!!
Remember, a review is just one man's opinion, I encourage all, newbs and FOGs alike to take some sticks and put them to paper. It's a really rewarding experience. Thanks for taking the time to read!
