(This is officially my first published review of a cigar, EVER. I have been smoking (and “jotting” down) for years, but never felt the need to publish my notes. What better smoke to christen my stogie commentating career than with a stick that’s older than I am.)

Slated for review today was…

Romeo Y Julieta No. 2 (Tubed)
Size (Shape): 5 X 42 (Petit Corona)
Estimated year of Production: 1982(ish)
Packaging: Aluminum Tube W/ Cedar insert
Origin: Cuba
Machine Made W/ Hand rolled Wrapper.

First third: Immediately struck with sweet “candy-like” flavors. Once into the initial inch or so, a very OBVIOUS butterscotch tone becomes present. Although not horribly complex, it sports a very pleasant finish.

Second Third: The sugary notes that were present in the beginning began to subside into a very mild chocolate. The base was still butterscotch and cream, but the finish was toasty, peaty, and scotch like. This is also where the draw and burn began to take a nose dive.

Final Third: Chocolate became the only discernable flavor in this third. Getting down to the nub, a little spice and pepper became apparent. This was most likely due to the heat caused by a loose draw.

Overall Impression: all in all, this was a very pleasant smoke. I have smoked a hand full of these before, and every time it surprises me how much flavor is still intact. Considering the age of the tobacco, the flavors are fuller that most vintage sticks that I smoke (still considerably mild by regular production standards). An inconsistent burn and draw took away from the experience at times, but that’s that gamble you take when you dabble in cigars that have been rolled nearly 30 years ago.
