Just to preface, we have always had labradors which we've gotten from rescue organizations and they've been great. Last year our chocolate had to be put to sleep at 17 1/2, our black lab now is almost 18, we have a chocolate that just turned 3 and our new guy whos 5.
My wife saw Charlie (our new yellow) on one of the rescue sites and immediately fell in love. The larger dogs are always harder to adopt and my wife has always been looking for a larger yellow. She converses back and forth with the contact and we end up adopting him. We drive up to PA to meet up with the contact and pick him up. Well he was a little bit bigger than we though lol. Our Chocolate is 88 lbs and Charlie makes him look like a pup. Anyway to the rough part. Apparantly, the neuter job that was done wasn't shall we say, up to par and so an infection set in. When I noticed a pinkish region, I took some gauze and saw that there was what looked like an abcess. I call our vet and he says to bring him in right away. Our vet is 90 miles from us (our choice) so it was a fun drive lol. Our vet looks at it and says "I've never seen anything like this from this procedure and I've done thousands" Sooo luckily we got him in when we did, after heavy antibiotic IV's, a re-do of the procedure and a couple of drain tubes, he's eating, up and around and a happy guy. He needed some dental work as well which we had done while he was down. I just can't imagine what would have happened if either we didn't notice this in time or if he hadn't been adopted.
Needless to say, the operation, hospitalization etc wasn't cheap but so worth it. He goes in to have his drain tubes removed on Monday then hopefully no more visits for at least a couple of months. G1
