Just to preface, we have always had labradors which we've gotten from rescue organizations and they've been great. Last year our chocolate had to be put to sleep at 17 1/2, our black lab now is almost 18, we have a chocolate that just turned 3 and our new guy whos 5.

My wife saw Charlie (our new yellow) on one of the rescue sites and immediately fell in love. The larger dogs are always harder to adopt and my wife has always been looking for a larger yellow. She converses back and forth with the contact and we end up adopting him. We drive up to PA to meet up with the contact and pick him up. Well he was a little bit bigger than we though lol. Our Chocolate is 88 lbs and Charlie makes him look like a pup. Anyway to the rough part. Apparantly, the neuter job that was done wasn't shall we say, up to par and so an infection set in. When I noticed a pinkish region, I took some gauze and saw that there was what looked like an abcess. I call our vet and he says to bring him in right away. Our vet is 90 miles from us (our choice) so it was a fun drive lol. Our vet looks at it and says "I've never seen anything like this from this procedure and I've done thousands" Sooo luckily we got him in when we did, after heavy antibiotic IV's, a re-do of the procedure and a couple of drain tubes, he's eating, up and around and a happy guy. He needed some dental work as well which we had done while he was down. I just can't imagine what would have happened if either we didn't notice this in time or if he hadn't been adopted.

Needless to say, the operation, hospitalization etc wasn't cheap but so worth it. He goes in to have his drain tubes removed on Monday then hopefully no more visits for at least a couple of months. G1

I admire you for rescuing pets, that's the way to go. IMO, God placed him in your care; knowing you would get him fixed up and give him the loving home every dog deserves. Kudos to you!

Thanks guys, he's "out of the woods" for now. Weird thing is he's spent more days at our vet than at our house. he's home tonite for only day #2. He's rightfully really needy so I may be sleeping in the bsmt tonite. G1

Glad to hear that he is recovering. It's always good to hear of a positive rescue story, there's too many bad ones!

Great to hear buddy, love labs! Our black lab George will be 12yo this November, hips are starting to go but God he loves his family and still does things like a pup... It will be a tearful day when he's gone. Labs in my opinion are the best family dogs, we got George when Mason was about 5mo old and my oldest Liam named him George and I added Bailey for my favorite movie.

Glad to hear everything worked out for the best. Massive  on adopting. I hate to see people buy dogs (especially the new "designer mutts") when so many rescue organizations have dogs (and cats) that need homes.

I'm a fellow lab lover myself. What you and your wife are doing is fantastic.

Charlie, and your other dogs, are very lucky to have you in their lives.

Cheers sent from Hank and Jack

My wife is a Registered Vet Tech and we always rescue animals. Our Golden, Macy was dumped in the woods and she has a deformed paw. She has been the best dog I ever had. She is battling cancer now and it really sucks. Always happy to see people adopt and rescue pets to give them a loving home. Best of luck to your family and new addition!

If you ever have any animal concerns PM me and my wife will gladly give you some free advice.

Here is a pic of the guys together. They're getting along well so far. He's a gentle giant! We have to go in Monday to have his drain tube removed then a couple of weeks while his stitches heal. They had to remove a fairly large area of necrotic tissue so we have to treat the wound carefully. Important thing is he's eating well, able to relax and is starting to get used to the house. G1
