Saint Luis Rey Series A
Origin: Cuba
Size: Gran Corona
Length: 5.675
Gauge: 46
Box codes: FOD JUL 03; PAS NOV 02

I think this is a very fine, underrated smoke that is an incredible value right now. I have tried a number of these from both box codes, above. All are impeccably constructed. The wrappers are beautiful with an oily sheen and small veins. The cigars come with a slight box press, but the press does not affect the draw. The draw has been perfect on every sample I have smoked. Wrappers on the '03 versions are noticeably darker than the '02. Both samples come from dress boxes.

The taste on these is very "Cubanesque", with a pronounced twang that lingers wonderfully on the palate with every puff. The flavors are rich and smooth, of medium strength and complexity. The slow, steady burn rarely needs a touch-up. Many experienced smokers may find these a bit on the mild side. I have read that versions prior to '02 were not as flavorful in blend and that '02/'03 seem to be an excellent vintage for this vitola. There are only slight differences in flavor between the two years sampled here. If I had to make a choice between the two, it would be difficult as both are quite excellent.

These are highly recommended. They are easy to find with three and four years of age. The price is superb and this vitola is the perfect example, IMHO, of why premium NC's have difficulty competing with the price of some Habanos. Both of the above codes are smoking wonderfully right now. If you like this smoke, as I do, the value makes it an excellent choice for "stocking up". SLR hit the jackpot with this blend for these years.

This is one terrific cigar. I have 12 02's in my humi right now. I have smoked 03's and 02's and neither disappointed. They have an allspice and nut theme with a terrific mellow/smooth woody base. I love this cigar!

Nice review. I picked up a fiver of '03s recently. After smoking two, I decided I had a new favorite cigar. Tasty and satisfying from start to finish.

Great review Fox, and thanks for recommending these as my first buy. They should be here in a few days; I feel like a kid at Christmas.

It would be interesting to get an 02 box and just let it sit for 5-10 years.
I can't imagine how good this smoke would be with some more age.
Definately an underrated smoke. Also, the churchill is pretty good itself.

Based on a sample from Fox I picked up a box of 02s and one of 03's a while back. I'm a happy camper.

Great review,Fox!

As Cuba pushes its limts on quality control with it's "flagship" brands like Monte and Cohiba, the lesser smoked brands are still high on quality and subsequently flavor.

I got a box of these back in the early '90's that was just excellent. Not having a sufficient humidor, I was unable to keep and age the box (doh!). I recently purchased a box ('05 or '06) and even though they are basically too young to smoke; I couldn't resist toasting one! The cigar showed great promise of what will be in the future....Earthy, core tobacco, hints of walnuts and nutmeg....Will be great in a few years.

In my humble opinion, here are a few other brands that are still being produced in such quantities that quality is still intact. Like diamonds in the rough, it's a real pleasure to go off the beaten path and discover Havanas that are great in their own right.

Juan Lopez
Ramon Allones
La Gloria Cubana
Cuaba
(not a great cigar by comparison, but one of the most well constructed figurados I have ever smoked)
Diplomaticos

Again, great review, Fox!
