well, its a hard decision to make, but i think we're gonna have to put our dog, Sonya down. Shes a french mastiff and pretty old and her hips are just about shot. the hardest part is our son really likes Sonya. shes his "puppy"
its gonna be rough. :hanghead:

I just went through this with my Border Collie. Two weeks ago tomorrow and I still keep thinking she's around. It was the right thing to do, but it still was hard.

this is the 2nd dog in a row that has had bad hip dysplatia (sp?) both were, are over 100 lbs. and i know that larger dogs have this problem as they get older, but in my opinion, a dog isnt a dog unless it weighs over 75 lbs. i just couldnt bring myself to get a "lap" dog.

We used to breed Labradors. It's never easy. Hip displaysia is thought to be both genetic and environmental. It seems to be much more prevalant in larger breeds. If there is anything I can do, pm me. So sorry for your loss.

Matt, so sorry to hear this. It's certainly tough but know you are making the right decision out of love for your best friend.

Sorry to hear this man. I hate to think of the number of times in my life this was necessary. It never gets easier. Damn dogs.

Always sad to lose a pet. I know how it is. I'm sure you'll have your time of grieving before experiencing the joy of getting a new pup.

Sorry to hear your sad news. Never an easy decision to be forced to make. I currently have a 4 year old Chow/Australian Sheppard mix that is showing early signs of hip dysplasia. Trying to do everything I can think of the keep him healthy for as long as possible. I'm recently started giving him Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements hoping that that will at least delay the pain from getting worse.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
