A friend of mine who isn't really a brother of the leaf would like to buy a couple of my ISOMs for him and a buddy to smoke. So do I charge him what I paid? Charge him a small premium ($1 or $2 more than I paid) or just give them to him?

I think that would depend on a couple of things.
1) Are they cigar smokers or just occasional users...if just occasional I would charge a little over what you paid as they might waste them.
2) How good of a friend....real good friend - gifted. Casual friend - your cost at least.

Whew...I can see this being a touch subject. How good of a friend is he? I've got a bud who smokes, but doesn't really get into the whole "culture" so to speak. That being said, we've traded smokes, I've given him some and I'll probably sell him a few from my latest purchase. Those will be sold at what I paid for them.

Now...if he wasn't really a friend? I might tag on a couple dollars or so...

He's my main instructor for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Most likely I'll give them to him at cost, but I wanted everyones take on this. And needed something help keep these forums moving.

Ohhhhhh...Trey's got a point!:blob:

Get 'em hooked and then trade for instruction! LOL!

I see nothing wrong with selling them at cost or giving them to him. All depends on how many, how you are stocked, and how close you are to the guy. Also depends on if you think the guy's gonna turn into a mooch if you give him smokes this time.

This sounds like a GIFT scenario.

Someone You Respect, ask's a simple thing of You.

Why notTurn Him on to Real Cigars?

Think of it as a Zen exersize. Yen and Yang, Just don't let Him pull Your Yang!

I don't sell cigars, as a Rule. I may trade Here and there, but not sold flat out. But, I've given away Hundreds and Humi's and Books and Magazines, ect.

New Guys are an opportunity to Show them How it's done Right.

Of course You train the Mooches fast.

But, I always thought of it like I'm an Ambassador for cigars, Ya know?

Give'em a few smokes, teach Him a bit about Fine Cigars and throw in a CA Magazine and call it Good.

If He's Cool, You could have a new Smoking Buddy!(who could Kick some AZZ, should it become nessessary!)

Think about it.

It depends on what the cigars are. If they're some cheapies or bundles, then probably no cost. If they are Cubans and he is a newbie, I would charge him a few bucks more than you paid because
a) something obtained for nothing, earns little respect
b) if he wants more cigars in the future, you've already set a precedent for pricing that you are comfortable with.
c) there is no real implied obligation to return any favor, since this is win-win.

This is a GREAT question!!!

I am always guarded when this happens and treat these situations on a case by case basis.

As a hard fast rule, I give away a ton of cigars to my friends and even potential newbies when I am out at a bar or club. Typically, they are non-cubans. I get a little leary when people ask about cubans and when they start bragging on how that is all they smoke. blah blah blah.

I have gifted cubans in the past and will continue to do so in the future, but not to a newbie! I typically wait until they have been smoking for a while before I introduce them to the dark side. I like to see if they really enjoy the hobby or just smoke them "to be cool".

The one thing about cubans is that I try not to be someone else's source. I will gladly go in on a box split or a group by, but I do NOT want to be their source. This is another reason I am very leary. I would hate for someone else to leave. move. break of a friendship and turn this into a "control" factor.

Maybe I am being paranoid, but I like to think of it as being careful!

I will most likely charge him cost.

A) I don't have many ISOM's
B) He offered to pay.
C) I don't expect him to become a mooch, but I don't want to start a habit.

I usually have cuban cigars on-hand mainly for that purpose..curious acquaintances and friends and also I might want to have these for my yard work.

That what Quinteros and JL Piedras are for. At $40+ a box one cant go wrong.

Good advice here. I would have either just gave them a couple PC's or Perlas or charged them cost.
