So my son got a stomach bug friday night after school. He was better by saturday night but my wife got. And then by 3am monday morning it was my turn.
Now I have not had to call in sick to work since last spring. I just do not get sick that much. But my boss immediately starts to give me a guilt trip about calling in somebody from their day off if I don't come in. I can understand if somebody calls in a lot but thats just not me.
Lets put it this way... the ups guy came yesterday and I didnt even open the box.
Anybody else got a boss like this?

If I have the slightest hint of a cold everyone at work tells me to go home. Once he catches what you have he should rethink his decisions.

He swears he has not used a sick day in 10 years and doesnt think anybody else should. If I could get away with it I would tell him "people get sick. Thats why the company gives us sick days."

I used to not take sick days and would struggle all day long... not anymore. As I get older recovery time and severity gets longer and worse so I take my sick days.
You could always tell the boss you'll come in but hell need to follow you around and clean up whatever comes out of you.

You should educate him from an occupational health and safety standpoint incorporated into a business model. People like him who come into work when sick actually lessen productivity and efficiency in the workplace in addition to possibly causing others to get sick, thus resulting in a chain reaction of sick days/staff shortages. Where as if he had just taken the sick day for its intended use then the loss would have been limited to one employee and one day.

Get away with it... What's wrong with telling him that? I'd file a complaint. You shouldn't be harassed for using an approved day off work. That IS why they give you sick days..

This is the problem with working in the environment I work on. I work for a national truck company so my boss is the boss or else I go over his head and he gets yelled at for it and turns around and comes back on me because there is nobody to monitor him.
The biggest issue I have with him is that he is lazy. Every other manager in a terminal our size fills in for a supervisor when they call in. He forces somebody else to cover making the other supervisors mad at the person who called in. If he would just man up and do his damn job everything would be ok.

Just tell him you need to take it and it is what it is and with your history he can see you don't take em unless you really need em. Im in the auto industry so I feel your pain. They always make a big ordeal if we miss a day of work. Even if its raining or snowing and slow as can be. I had a pipe burst in my finished basement once. My better half called to ask why the ceiling had running water and I had a manager at the last place I work tell me I needed to stay at work to make money to have it fixed. I told him I was leaving and didn't give a s what he thought. You just gotta have the guts to do what you have to do for your family and not worry about it. It'll sort out one way or another.Im lucky enough in my industry I'm too valuable at what I do when compared to my peers to be let go. And If I was Id be hired on at another company before I made the 5 min drive home.

Hate reading stuff like this, but seems it happens more than people would like to admit.

Nobody should feel bad for taking a sick day, even if you're not sick, but caring for a child or parent.

That is called illegal. If you go over the bosses head and he comes down on you, that's retaliation. If you ever have to tell his boss something, you tell his boss that if you get any grief about this from your boss, you will have a nice chat with the HR department and if they think it's okay, contact a lawyer.

The last sick day I took was in 1989, saying that, I always ask my men to stay home if they dont feel good, I NEVER expect or ask them to come in when they dont feel good and they dont take advantage of me and usually hate to miss work. As for your boss, I'd give him a big ole wet sloppy kiss on the lips when you get to work, Maybe even a little tongue just to be sure it takes:) heck spit in his water, lick his sandwich, drool on his keyboard.... gosh I'm hateful:)

Thanks for the support guys. I am pretty good at letting his crap go in one ear and out the other without giving a shit. I just get tired of him doing this to all of us.

Yep, I nearly got turned down for the acting supervisor position because I had two unscheduled sick days in the last six months. Working for people like that sucks.
