I have been smoking cigars for over 20 years now, and there is a ton I still don't know. Since most of the things I have learned have come from BOTL, I thought I'd pass this on in case it helps anyone....

I have noticed that drawing very slowly really helps both the enjoyment and the burn of my cigars.

I will take 10 full seconds or more when I draw. I have noticed since I have started doing this that my cigar burns cooler, more evenly, and I also have a huge sample of smoke to enjoy :).

Thanks! I'll have to try this.

I must say, since joining BOTL, I light my cigars differently, cut them differently, and will have to draw them differently. I guess I was doing it all wrong :stretchgr

Im currently having a tat #6 el triunfador and have always done the puff puff draw style. Just tried the long slow draw and got a much cooler, smoother mouth of smoke. Thanks for the awesome tip.

totally agree. focus on the texture of the smoke pouring over your palate. also helps turn it towards a more meditative action, for me at least.

zen and the art of herfing? o)

Spot on, Cliff, some guys call it "sipping" the cigar. I have found that it really helps with the smaller RG panatela and ninfa sized cigars.

You've probably discovered the real art of smoking a cigar the right way. Drawn to quickly it causes the cigar to burn hot....if the draw isn't deep enough it causes the cigar to go out eventually. If drawn multiple times within a minute the taste deteriorates and tastes charred. Patience is key when smoking a cigar and most of those who do it right and it becomes second nature.

For me, it depends a bit on how the cigar is burning. If I have an exceedingly well constructed smoke that allows me to walk away for several minutes and it keeps burning, the slow draw is the way to go. Never timed it, and probably never drew on a smoke for 10 seconds, but those good smokes that let you draw slow.....the best! Gonna have to start paying more attention now.

Great tip! I'm about to break open a new box- Berger & Argenti Tubos- they are a complicated smoke, so doing the slow draw might just be perfect. Thanks again!

I've been smoking for under 10 years and I still am learning but I have for some time let smokes rest a bit after drawing. I take my time with cigars, sometimes too long as I can take a while to smoke some of them. I also do a few purges throughout too, just to make sure no bitterness or harshness but sometimes no matter what I do I get it and it is usually near the last third.
