Last Monday, my faithful Beagle, Rocky, passed away. A few months ago we took him into the vet because he was getting visibly sluggish and blind... They told us he was just old: Going deaf, going blind, mild arthritis, but he was okay... they didn't even do any tests, just looked at hiim, poked him and called him good.

Monday, we took him into the vet again (He was wheezing)... He has lung cancer, his lungs are filled with fluid, he has awful arthritis.. They went to do a blood test, and he dropped dead on the table. All the while, I'm on campus... I didn't even get to say goodbye to my dog.

Rocky's been my dog since I was six, and I'm never going to see him again... I figured he didn't have long left, but I would get to see him again, some weekend sooner or later, during the school year.... Guess not.

And then, to top it all off, turns out my girlfriend's golden retriever, Pippy, has liver cancer... They're putting her down tomorrow.

This week really blows guys. I'm going through my last two Padrons this weekend. One for Rocky, and one for Pippy...

I miss my goddamn dog...

That's awful, brother. I haven't had animals quite that long, but we had to put one of our cats to sleep this spring and it was incredibly tough. He kept me company through business school and had a difficult life before we took him in. Good animal friends are a wonderful thing.

Lost my Doberman Jake in July and I cried like a baby. I know what your going through. Amazing how dogs become a member of the family.

I pick my next Doberman puppy in 2 weeks, house just aint the same without a dog, especially a good one.

Hang in there.

First thing I do when I graduate and get a place of my own... Get a dog of my own. I know I'm going to go to the pound, or some such rescue program... But I really want a rottweiler. I found a new tobacconist near campus, and my first time there I met their rotty puppy, prince, who hangs out at the place and plays with customers... He's at like 9 weeks, and already bigger than my beagle ever was.... and he's so nice...

sorry for your loss, people who don't own pets don't realize losing them is like losing a memeber of the family. I know i'm getting close to my dog leaving us. She's 16yrs old shepard/beagle mix. she's deaf and getting harder for her to move around but she still got some fight in her, stole half a whopper out of my hand yesterday.

I just wish the vet had actually given him a real checkup a few months back, rather than guessing he was okay... At least then I would have seen this coming, and could have said goodbye to him... I feel silly saying it, I know some people will say "It's just a dog"... But I really miss Rocky, and wish I coulda said goodbye to him. Given him a good scratch behind the ear or something.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Not being able to say good bye is hard for sure. I had to do it with a family member of mine a few years ago. Just a phone call telling me to come down to the ER that my 22 y.o. brother had died over night. Make time to grieve even with everything else going on. Most important sit back, light up a cigar and remember all the good times together.

Sorry to hear my friend, I recently lost my first dog which I had since age 7. Losing a dog is still losing a member of the family.

My friend I really know how you feel. I am not a people person. I'm a dog person. Nothing compares to the love that dogs show for their people. The kind of unconditional care that dogs provide is irreplaceable. I have always had dogs in my home(s). They are just amazing animals. The loss of one is truly comparable to losing a family member to me. We had to put down our 15 year old Corgi about a year and a half ago (I am 23 years old, so like you with Rocky, I was fairly young when we got Murphy, and had her for a huge portion of my life so far), and it was devastating. She was sick for a few years, and eventually her quality of life was just not there anymore. Despite all of that, even with cancer, tumors, bad knees, and bad hearing, she would race to the door every day when I came home from work or school to dance (kind of bounce up and down, back legs stationary, front end bouncing around like a madwoman) and lick, and howl an ecstatic "HELLO! OMG IT'S BEEN LIKE 8 HOURS SINCE I LAST SAW YOU! HOLY FUCK THIS IS EXCITING!!!!!" That kind of love, and personality just doesn't exist anywhere, other than from a loving dog.

I will be keeping you in my thoughts for sure dude, and will definitely sit out on the balcony with my dogs (a Beagle, and a Beagle mix mutt, named Dink and Emma) and think about the dogs I've had to put down in the past, and the great memories we shared, and you and your dude Rocky, and your Girl's dog too. Take care, and take the time to remember. They really can be true members of the family. I'm really sorry for your loss. Best to you and yours.

Hey J, I know exactly how you feel. We came back from break after boarding one of our 3 Labs with the vet this past Friday (the other 2 go to a "boot camp") and on the way there, called to see how Molly did. She was 17+ so we've been very lucky but recently she hasn't been walking, was losing control of bowel functions but was completely aware of her surroundings. After a long discussion with our vets (2 of which have seen her since Molly was 2ish), we decided that it was best to let her join her "run" with her sister again. I"ve never personally had to make this decision so it was more on the part of talking to our vets, one whom I totally trust in any type of situation, that we came to the decision. I guess its not like people where if you're still breathing, you keep em going. Once the dog's quality of life reaches a certain point its time, which I had a real hard time with.

The difficult part of this to me is the negligence of your vet. That may be why once we found ours, we were happy and we still drive 90+ miles for them. They're not a super modern facility where the pets are simply numbers, they're caring, but at the same time get the latest in information due to their close association with VT's vet school.

Will smoke one for Rocky Pippy and Molly today.
My deepest condolences and only time will heal the hurt. G1

So sorry for your loss. I'll be smoking a good one in honor of Rocky tonite and I'll be thinking of my golden retriever, Colonel James B. Beam, as well. He's still with us and I miss him terribly.

I've had big dogs my whole life and it just sucks to lose a family pet... just sucks. The only thing that works is to get a puppy.

Keep you head up!!!
