Anyone know of anywhere in Punta Cana, DR to get cigars ? I have heard bad things about trying to find shops/reputable vendors. Can someone give a bit of heads up as I might be going down there.

Thanks

Was there last year. Every cuban is fake, and the ones that are not are over priced. I just bought local made cigars, and they were great for about a few bucks a stick. Some of the places even had guys rolling, and the tobacco was ok. Honestly, stick with the locally made brands. They taste great on the beach and nice weather.

Hard to find down there - Fake CC's all over; Hotels have shops but overpriced. Can get tours to local factories which is interesting but in my experience smokes are nothing exceptional. When I went, I was very glad I bought down my own smokes with me.

Definitely, bring your own cigars to the DR if you go to Punta Cana. Try to get 2 tours in Punta Cana (Domenico and Don Lucas Cigars)....If you can, go to Santiago or La Romana, you'd get better cigars and better factories.

Just got back, and every Cuban I saw was fake. Also, all of the DR brands were priced too high, I could pick most of the stuff up on CI for far less. I ended up bringing most of my own sticks, which was a good call since it was all top line stuff that I was certain about.

I did a box split with some family while down there. We talked to our butler, concierge guy who ever he was and had some "connections" for cubans. They smoked real nice fake or not. He gave us a few cigars to sample including a cuban and some local cigars.

They really push their own local cigars and the big name Dominican ciagrs too. Which weren't bad. But I'm glad I took about 25 of my own down with me. Saved me the $$ on buying overpriced cigars. Plus got to herf with a few cigar lovers I met down there also who were staying at the same resort.

IMHO, bring your own and try some of the local cigars. Don't spend a dime on the cubans there.

Sounds like good advice CVAC085
Where I stayed, the price for 1 Cohiba "Cuban" was an easy $40.00 if I remember correctly. Nothing was cheap in that shop.

We actually went on a group tour to some local shops outside the resort (since they really don't recommend us leaving the resort grounds) and went to a shop that showed us how they roll cigars and had some for sale. I got my girlfriend's dad a box of hand rolled vanilla ones which he enjoyed.

If you do leave the resort, ask at the shops which is the best locally made cigar. They'll light up like lightbulbs and hopefully put you in the rigjt direction.

Not to de-rail, make sure you try their native Brugal rum and some mamajuana (not marijuana).

I figure rum will be a plenty. Looking forward to swimming from my room to the bar.

I was there last October. Didn't know squat about cigars back then. I did know, however, not to buy any Cubans because they're probably fake. We got drunk one night and a buddy of mine and I decided to buy some cigars from the cigar stand on the resort. The guy lit up a cigar and stuck it in my mouth before we could even ask about cigars. The prices were crazy high, but everything initially is down there. These people love to haggle. When they start giving you stuff for free after you've agreed on a price, you've spent too much. We both bought a box of cigars. I got a box of 10 Davidoff millennium robustos, some other Davidoff, and whatever cigar I was smoking for $140. My buddy got the same deal. We had to go back to the room for some cash, and decided to tip the guy $20 and give him an even $300. We didn't have a cutter or lighter, so we tried to purchase some from him. He wanted $25 for a $2 plastic guillotine, and a $.99 bic. I said, "You take $300 for everything?" "Sure, no problem." There went his tip.
