So I have never smoked in my car, but I have a four hour road trip tomorrow that I thought I could make more enjoyable with a smoke. Anyone have any tips on air fresheners and how they keep their vehicle nice?

I know somebody will have the complete 411.
But my tips:
Keep as much air flow as possible (via windows, sunroof).
Depending on your car, don't put the heat or air on. But blast it after you've had the car aired out for a while (to clear out any smoke smell that may have clung to the system).
A little febreze or something similar afterwards doesn't hurt.

Don't smoke infused cigars in your car. I did this with a DE Java once... The smell left behind is better than that of a regular cigar (Better to passengers, your preference may vary), but the smell will cling like crazy and take WEEKS to go away.

Otherwise, windows down, vents not blowing

I smoke in the car just about every day and there is little to no smell after. The key is to create negative air pressure so all the smoke gets exhausted.

Crack the driver's side window slightly (couple of inches) with all other windows up. Turn on the fan to medium or so on the FLOORBOARD (heat or cool, doesn't matter) with the vents on/open. You will notice the air flow take all of the smoke out the driver's side window crack.

Ideally, you want all of your smoking to be done towards the window, even holding your cigar in your left hand closer to the window.

The method works and my wife (who has a keen sense of smell) will attest to it.

Having a cigar in the car is a great way to make a long drive less stressful!

Here is what I do:

Crack the passenger and driver side windows open. Open the moonroof.

Turn on the heater/AC to the floorboards.

When I leave the car, I spray 3 sprays of Febreeze in the car. The Febreeze will stay in the car until I get back in (usually Noon at lunchtime) and the smell is gone. All you will smell is Febreeze :)

I disagree with both. You want airflow, but only airflow directed where you want it. Otherwise, the smoke could go anywhere. Also, you DO want the the heat/air/fan on as part of the directed air flow.

You only want the driver's side window open, and just slightly. Vents closed on the dashboard, but open and blowing on the floorboard.

Listen to him, not me. I don't smoke in my car, was just giving advice passed down to me.

I rarely smoke in my car and what I do to minimize the after effects of it is simply crack the windows and pop the back of the sunroof up so that it sucks the smoke out. If I have it handy, I'll spray some Ozium in the car at the end of the day/trip and then vacuum the car out at the earliest opportunity thereafter.

Oh, and never leave a full ashtray or cigar butts in the cigar, always dump them in the garbage at your destination.

Two-yen worth of additional recommendations : if you don't have a passenger to cut your cigars, you should precut your cigars before you start driving. You can do it on the road with one of the cutters with the backing plate, like the Drew Estates / JdN cutters, but it kind of requires you to steer with your elbows, which isn't considered safe. A standard double guillotine would be a pain to line up while driving. Also, a torch, like THIS for example, with a 45 degree angle head and an external flame adjuster that can be operated without a screwdriver (in the case of the linked torch, the whole bottom rotates to adjust the flame height).

MU Mike has it exactly right. Try smoking with just the driver window cracked, then open the other windows. You'll instantly notice the smoke going from being sucked out (one window cracked) to being blown around in the car with the other windows open. Another key thing is to leave the window open for a while after you smoke to get the residual smoke out.

I smoke a lot in my truck, and while I can't smell anything I've asked several of my friends. They have ALL said it smells like cigar smoke in the vehicle...even when I'm not smoking. I think that in most all cases our vehicles smell like smoke we are just immune to the smell. Whatever though...it's not stopping me. :cbig:

My method as well. I commute 90 miles a day and look forward to the after work smoke every day.

Same as above mostly.
I smoke in my 2 vehicles all winter long on the driveway as there really is no-where esle to go. The same thing works for both vehicles and you cant tell that I smoke cigars in them.
Like stated before, if you produce a pressure differential in the cabin of the vehicle, the smoke has no choice but to go out the window, but if you open up 2 windows...especially while driving, you lose that pressure and the smoke lingers. Make sure it is only one window and you are blowing\holding the cigar smoke closer to that window while driving. I had a friend smoke a cigar while I had one once while I was driving, we had both windows open and the smell in the vehicle lasted for almost 2 weeks...never happened again.

I had lingering smoke smell the one time I smoked in my car (had all the windows down in the summer) but a good wipe down with leather cleaner pretty much got rid of it.

My experience as well. My wife definitely noticed the difference, that's for sure!
