OK total noob here...padron me (heh heh) if this topic has been belabored in some archived thread somewhere...

With regards to smoking time, I often notice what seem to me to be very long smoke times reported in reviews. For example, 1:30 - 1:45 for a robusto? I find that if I relax with a drink and get all comfy, I might get 45 mins from the average cigar, but have had this or that churchill last 1:00-1:15.

Call me crazy but I'm just learning here and have heard that 1-2 draws per minute is about right to get the most out of a cigar, and I have literally sat with a timer and taken a draw every 30 secs and still come up with about 45 mins for a robusto.

Is the idea to keep the cigar barely burning for optimum flavor? Smaller vs larger draws? zen meditation? am I doing something wrong? and does that mean I'm missing the best these cigars have to offer?

Any advice appreciated...and pls include your avg burn time for a robusto.
Thanks!

Yeah it would never take me 1 hour 25 minutes plus for a robusto. An hour at the most. I smoke a double corona in about an hour 40 minutes. If you are smoking a churchill in 1 hour than i would have to believe you are smoking pretty fast though.

as a general rule, i try to make sure i'm drawing smoke that is cool to avoid bitter, burnt, muddy flavors. i'll also check to see how far the heat from the coal has travelled and how spongy the cigar is because of that. if it feels spongy, if it draws warm or hot, i'll slow down.

my average burn time for a robusto is about an hour. i don't have the patience to make one last for an hour and a half. whether i'm missing something from the cigar, i guess i won't know until i try and slow it down - something i might try this weekend.

Pa,
I must smoke slow because it always takes me over an hour to smoke a robusto 5x50 usually around an hour and a half. It took me an hour and a half to smoke a lonsdale la riqueza 6 1/2x42 tonight and two hours yesterday to smoke a CAO Lx2 Lancero 7 1/2x38

I wish I could smoke faster that way my wife wouldn't be so mad at me for never spending time with her.

If the smoke isn't too hot and you aren't drawing hard enough to cause a tunnel or another burn problem, you aren't smoking too fast.

If it isn't going out... you aren't smoking too slow.

No worries, just smoke.

Like FunkyJJ said, my pace is much slower than one draw every 30 seconds. It sort of is dictated by the cigar itself though, as I tend to draw at a rate that feels natural based on how the cigar is burning, and what it needs to stay lit, but not get hot.

I average a draw every 60 t o 90 seconds, but that is me. I like to keep it as cool as I can.
I'm with Jason on this. You said your a cigarette smoker too so your used to drawing in fast and frequently. This might be a reason but it could be the cigar too. If it's a cigar that is very easy to draw from it (Robusto) very well could finish in 45mins. If it's packed a little tighter it could take 1hr 30min. Sometimes it depends on the cigar and you will figure as your experience takes you how to smoke a cigar depending on it's character. Just take your time...Burning a hot cigar is not what you want.

Pretty much me. Example this morning I had a Jaime Garcia Res Especial Toro. I started at 0505 and finished at 0655. Wasn't long enough, now I got the wifes to do list.:crackwhip

If I had to guess, I would say I take a puff every 45-60 seconds. That is the speed that works best for me. As long as you are enjoying it, I don't think smoking time is relevant.
Besides, if you smoke a robusto in 35-45 minutes, you can smoke 3 to my 2. In school we would call that using time wisely.

Great answers, thanks!

I think I'm probably not compromising the cigar by smoking too fast. For example, by learning and keeping to 30-60 seconds, the taste doesn't usually get bitter, etc. but in the spirit of experimentation, I'll try to slow it down to no more than 1 per minute and see how it goes...

I think best advice here is Tmoney20007:

If the smoke isn't too hot and you aren't drawing hard enough to cause a tunnel or another burn problem, you aren't smoking too fast.

If it isn't going out... you aren't smoking too slow.

No worries, just smoke.

Thanks!

I tend to take my time smoking, a robusto can take me up to an hour and 15 minutes if I take my time and nub it. I don't see the point of smoking fast at all. If I am in a hurry I won't smoke or just pick something I can finish in the allotted time.

i smoked a psd4 a couple nights ago. although it is slighty shorter than a robusto, and the fact that i nubbed the heck out of it, it took me a little over 1 hour.
