I am excited for you!
Pipe tobacco is very different from a cigar. Flavors are more subtle/nuanced. Often times sweeter too.
I immediately gravitated towards predominately Virginia / VaPer, but everyones tastes are different. An easy choice to start is McClelland 5100 Red Cake probably, but others have more experience / knowledge than I do. That, and it really all comes down to what you like, so some exploration on your part will be needed, but that is part of the fun!

Nice! I just started earlier this year too. Packing a bowl correctly so that you don't have to keep messing with it is the hardest part at first, but you'll eventually get the hang of it.

Like Sweem, I took to the Virginia/Perique blends right away. But I also really enjoy latakia, which has a deeper flavor that I think you may be looking for.

Ultimately, the only sure way to figure out what you like is to experiment. Enjoy!

I started the pipe a few months ago. Lots of good info here got me on the right track quickly. As soon as I let my baccy dry down a bit and packed bowles little looser things really started clicking and I was hooked. I'm 2/3 pipe 1/3 cigars now. I haven't smoked a baccy that I haven't enjoyed (except wet Blue Note from Altidas, pitched it) but my favorites are mostly Virginia or VaPers but I do crave Latakia/English blends at times.
Enjoy!!!

I think wet/dry was the biggest obstacle. I tried smoking some wet aros when I first started and was really discouraged. Not that aros are bad (I still smoke them), but they seem to be unsmokable at first. Packing was also a learning experience. Dunhill is a great place to start. Best of luck. Stick with it, the varieties and cost of pipe tobacco is amazing. I'm saving so much money with lowering my cigar intake.

Dunhill Nightcap, or early morning pipe would be a good starting point as well.
When I started, I got tongue bite so bad, it was sore for a week. I've found that a cup of hot tea counteracts some of the pH imbalance (stinging) you might feel. (If it does happen to you)
