Now, I'm gonna keep this one short and simple. There's something to be said for taking a moderately unknown product and endorsing it through a show such as SOA to make it more recognizable and attractive, BUT. BUT. as cigar smokers we're already facing enough of a challenge in convincing the FDA to leave our smokes alone. One of their larger concerns is that they're under the impression that cigars are being marketed towards underage children. Something we all know is absurd, but will be much harder to argue once things like THIS hit the market. This is only going to be a problem for cigar rights activists and the guys who take time out of their busy lives to lobby for us in DC.

I don't follow at all.

SOA isn't geared towards underage children. In fact, it's rated TV-MA.

I see this as something that could pull in new cigar smokers by attracting motorcycle enthusiasts... increasing support for cigar rights.

That rating is for viewers 17+

Its only a year, but on paper it's enough to hurt the plight. Besides, how many parents actually stop their children under 17 from watching that show, or any MA show for that matter. I'm not saying it WILL happen, but these are arguments that can be made to negatively impact our smoking rights.

Ill parrot what mwlabel has said...

since when is a show about outlaw bikers getting high, drunk, etc.. fighting, shooting, and killing people... combined with sex scenes, prostitution themes, prison rape, and daily doses of adultry... considered to be marketing toward children?

Im not sure what 99% of america encourages their kids to watch...

but I barely let my kids watch Jessie and Good Luck Charlie...

Thats because there is no higher rating for television... anything stronger than that and it would be restricted to HBO, cinemax, etc.. .

Any argument can be made.. about anything.... all it takes is a good attorney and a few bucks to file the lawsuit...

frankly I WISH someone would bring something this nonsensical to court... so that the american community could laugh at them..

everytime someone drinks a beer on "New Girl".. are they targeting young kids and trying to market alcohol to minors?

or everytime homer simpson says "hubba hubba" to marge... are they trying to encourage 6 years olds to have sex? (it is a cartoon afterall)...

ridiculous argument...

by this same argument.. we should restrict cigar manufacturers from using fantasy names and charictures like dragons and knights... on their labels and names... shouldnt let them use any cool, stylized fonts in hip colors.... etc... afterall.. it might be found attractive to a kid....

we should just have plain white, generic bands with black block print that say "cigar"....

So?

They CAN argue whatever they want. They can claim Satan sends humans cigars from hell. I'd worry about arguments that actually carry weight, and not nonsense like this.

And I agree with you 100% but were also talking about an administration which means to implement a ~60% tax on bundles because they believe their price and packaging (bands and colorful labels) makes them geared towards an underage market.

Hum... that's exactly what they want. And its already enforced in, i believe, australia? The FDA is trying to do away with all attractive labeling and is trying to implement generic boxes with generic bands with plain text and no flair.

I agree with Dave. However, I don't think we should give them any excuses. An Emilio Drag K, I think that's the name, the one with the pink dragon, only has a following in the cigar world. SoA has a huge following and the argument can be made that it will bring minors over, or, at the very least, attract them. Perhaps it's not logical but when has logic entered in? And, when we are literally the 1% (premium cigar smokers), the other 99% won't care when the draconian methods you mentioned are passed. They should but they won't until it affects them.

Tobacco plain packaging laws are a very real thing and are already being implemented in some parts of the world. It's enforced in Australia for cigarettes, not cigars yet, my apologies. Yet, it's the relatable marketing such as branding your cigar SOA that's driving establishments like the FDA to pass these homogenous packaging laws.

Dave, those Aussies are not getting those cigars from retailers in Australia. They are all in plain packaging. Habanos SA is taking them to court over it.

Love the show and Zooey!

But I mean this isn't the first show to have a line of cigars. Also if they would go after that would they then say that TV and movies need to pull all persons that smoke/drink and do everything else? If you are going to go for this argument then why not pin point sports figures that have there own lines as well. Kids look up to them no?

WOW can you teeth really look like that? Are they sure that maybe the person in that photo never brushed their teeth, or they were also on meth?
