We are planning to head to Cancun (out of DFW) in about a month and I planned to bring an assortment of both NC's and CC's as we aren't planning to leave the resort. I was, planning to pack two plastic guillotine cutters and a punch along with a cheapish ronson soft flame butane lighter in a TSA/DOT container in my checked luggage.

I was thinking I'd pack my sticks in a cigar caddy all with custom labels with the CC's labeled as something else. I would not be bringing any cigars back home.

Is this possible? Advisable? Any other suggestions?

You shouldn't have any issues with US Customs. They only care about what is coming into the country, not what is going out. You may want to check and see what the regulations are for your destination though. Not so much because you are bringing CCs though since they are not "illegal" where you are going. What you want to check is the number of cigars that you are allowed to bring into Mexico.

As far as lighters and cutters, I travel with them all the time. If it is a disposable like a Bic it does not need to be in a DOT case and can go with you in your carry on. If it is refillable it does need to be in a case in your checked luggage. The only unknown is whether you will have an issue bringing the lighter back home with you from Mexico. Some places, China in particular will confiscate them. Not sure about Mexico.

My only other suggestion is to carry your cigars with you in your carry luggage. Depending on the altitude of the flight it can get a little bit cold in the cargo area of the plane.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Don't think you will have any issues. Even if you had your CCs with the original labels, I would not foresee any problems with the TSA. Especially since you are going to a country where CCs are legal. I did not have any problems when I went to Spain. I put all the cigars in Tupperware and put it in my carry on bag.

I've read that usually there is no problem with the labels but sometimes there is...I'd rather there be less suspicion if possible. My luck and id get the TSA nazi who just happens to know about cigars.

You have absolutely no worries about bringing CC's out of the country, don't bother with taking the bands off. You do not go through US Customs leaving nor does TSA give a damn about cigars... not their jurisdiction. Also, as of last November, the limit of bringing cigars into Mexico was 25. After 25, you can be taxed if they catch them.

This.

I always fly with Habanos and no one cares.

In addition to the above, I would absolutely carry your cigars with you on the plane. As a tip, if you use a stogi-dor locking case, put a business card in the seal somewhere. With the cabin pressure issue, you can (probably will) end up with that thing sealed shut and you almost have to break it or ruin the seal to get it open. Enjoy your trip.

I take CC aboard all the time. Just do t bring them back with you. Never an issue. You do not go through customs leaving and the TSA does not care about Cuban cigars.

I crack mine during takeoff... Close at altitude, and reveal for descent..
I've also used the folded piece of paper method on one side and locked the other side.

Bringing soft flame butane ronsons in a tsa approved container. Torches are not allowed according to the TSA site.

I would not take a good/expensive cutter with you to Cancun. Although I have never had a problem in the US or elsewhere since they have been OK to travel with, I did lose a nice Palio at the Cancun airport to the security screening personnel. The harder I argued with them that it was legal, the more they wanted to confiscate. In Mexico, they will do what they want not what is legal and you have no recourse. Like others have said, no issues taking Habanos outside the US

Yep, taking two cheap plastic guillotines and a plastic punch. They can have them when I'm on my way back for all I care
