"Americans now smoke about 40 percent of the world's cigars. Between 2000 and 2012, cigar sales in the U.S. more than doubled from 6 billion to more than 13 billion cigars a year." Whose figure?
Cuba produces 90 million cigars annually, how in the hell are they going to get 30% to 40% of the US market?
You cannot believe the media, they don't care about facts, and will print total bullshit to keep their useless jobs .

I'm almost 100% sure that $13 billion number is incorrect. That is probably taking into account machine made cigars and cigarillos. There is no way that $13 billion represents premium cigars. Premium cigars is only a fraction of that number.

13 billion premium cigars is even more laughable of a number. The reporting on these stories is awful as the reporters don't even know what a premium cigar is, and when a number they're reporting isn't accurate.

According to the US Census Bureau, here are some 319 million adults in the US in 2014. That would mean every man, woman, and child in the country on average, is buying two boxes of cigars a year.

More realistically, in 2013, the CDC said that approximately 5% of the adult population smoked cigars, or a little over 12 million adults smoked cigars. That would mean that in order for there to be a 13 billion cigar market, every cigar smoker in the country on average, is buying over a thousand cigars a year. I've been smoking for five years, slowly building my stash up (buying more than I smoke) for the last three, and I don't even own that many cigars.

Edit: Upon further research, I think the 13 billion number might be accurate, but accounts for all premium, non premium, and machine made cigars and cigarellos.

Here's some basic facts for 'premium' cigars in U.S.:
U.S. Adult cigar smokers: 12.3 million (CDC 2014 Census)
Height of Cigar Boom in 1995: 176.3 million units imported to U.S. market
Current importation: 278.5 million units.

Is it any wonder that most modern day journalists have their heads up their asses?

I guess fact checking is now beneath journalistic integrity. It is common knowledge that to fit in a journalist must have a certain world view.
And reporting the facts is now optional.

Yes,the view one gets looking out of ones' ass............
Facts? they take away from the "story" and cloud the writer's " free spirit "..........
