Last night I sat down for my nightly smoke and after lighting and taking the first few puffs I noticed what I felt was the distinct character of mold. Ive never had a mold outbreak and I doubt with my storage conditions its even possible. The stick definitely didn't have any mold on it or coming from the foot, but still mold has a pretty unique essence thats hard to mistake IMO. When you smell or taste it you know it. This was a cigar Ive smoked 3/4 of the box of already so I knew the flavor to expect and my dinner was pretty routine so I couldn't see that playing a factor. Quickly mulling this over I decided to toss the stick and grab another which ended up not having that same moldy impression. Whats more confusing is this happened a few weeks ago with a stick of a completely different brand. Really sucks tossing a LE and another premium but the taste of smoking mold isn't only gross its an obvious red flag.

Im not sure what to make of it but being a natural product I assume there has to be a chance the filler leaves might have gotten moldy post-roll and maybe it wasn't visible. Is there any sense to this? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Actually, that makes perfect sense to me, Cole..entirely possible I would imagine.

My question is...what did the moldy flavor taste like? Did it have a sort of musty characteristic? (I've tasted that many times and always ass/u/med it to be mold, or the beginnings thereof).

Yea musty would be a good description. It tasted the way a moldy room or wet old rotted out wood smells.

I've smoked a few Davidoffs that had a strong musty odor (especially the ones stored in tubos). The musty profile also appeared on the draw here and there. Maybe certain aged tobaccos develop that profile (?).

I had the experience with a Special R, a Millenium, and a Winston Churchill. I enjoyed it as something different. I also remember an Avo 88 with the same smell/flavor.

No I was too pissed it was happening with a nice stick and tossed it. I thought about it afterwards but it was already too late at that point. With how many of them Ive smoked though I'll say I wouldn't have thrown away one of last years best LEs on some slightly off nuance it was pretty strong and wasn't pleasant.
